Blog changes… What are your thoughts?

I have some changes planned for the blog in the next few months, and I’d love to hear what you think. Please let me know if you have thoughts or ideas on any of this!

I learned so much from our recent survey. I want to thank everyone who took the time to answer it… we had about 600 responses and I read every word. Now I’d like to tell you what I learned, and see if you have anything you’d like to add.

I won’t include everything, because there is a ton of good information. And we are going to tweak things that aren’t mentioned here. But I think this should cover the biggest points.

Interaction:

  • More Posts: Many of you said you’d like more of the same, which is nice to hear! Some people said they’d like to have daily posts. I think we come pretty close to that already, so starting in August we’ll nudge it up a little and start posting every weekday.
  • Improve the comments: A few of you said that you felt there were a couple commenters who seem antagonistic or who are always correcting others. I want this to be a supportive place for everyone, and I consider it my responsibility to make sure you all feel welcome. I’m happy to say that I think I’ve hit upon a good technical solution for this, so let’s see how it goes.

Visuals:

  • Design and aesthetic is important: Many of you commented that you like the design or aesthetic of the blog, though a few of you suggested improvements to the layout. We’re actually working on a full redesign right now, which should debut late next month. It will look pretty different around here, but equally charming and much less cluttered (I think)!
  • Add Video: Several people suggested adding video to the tutorials. I agree that this would be great! I’m looking at some video options now.

Blog topics:

  • More tutorials: You guys love tutorials! I think almost everyone said they want more. Now, I think we already feature a LOT of tutorials, and I definitely don’t plan to slow down on that. But we might include some different types and more pattern-specific ones, as well as general sewing techniques. And we’re thinking about labeling tutorials with a skill level to help you, as well as make sure we have a good balance of beginner / intermediate / advanced.
  • More organization for the tutorials: I know it’s hard to find tutorials we’ve done before. We have some awesome features to fix that coming up in the web site redesign! We’ll keep them categorized and easy to find again later.
  • More sewalongs and fitting advice: This was a big request. I haven’t done much of this here because there have been so many great sewalongs on other blogs, but now I see that it would make sense to have them here as well. So we’ll be starting a new sewalong very very soon! I’ll be sure to include specific fitting advice for some common alterations.
  • More customer projects: This was another huge one! Understandably, you said you feel inspired seeing the patterns on real sewists with different body types and styles. So we plan to introduce a new feature on the blog to showcase some of our favorites.

Oh, and several people mentioned that they miss the old “gallery” page we used to have. Well, honestly, it just got too big and difficult to manage or update. BUT, again, we’re going to add features in the new design that will bring some of that back to the site. So yay!

  • Our finished projects: Many people said they’d like to see more of what we’re working on, both for personal sewing and for CP. So we’ll be sharing more of that too (though to be honest, I’ve mostly been sewing boring things like curtains for my new house!)
  • More design process and sneak peeks: You guys seem pretty interested in hearing about how the patterns are designed and made, as well as getting sneak peeks of what’s coming. Since we have patterns for Fall coming, I’ll start sharing some of our design process for those in the coming weeks!

Other stuff:

  • You like Snippets!: Even though we didn’t ask about it specifically, I was really happy to see that many people mentioned that you really like Snippets! That is awesome. A few people did say that they’d like the emails to be longer or more in depth. But I do think the short format of “quick tips” seems best suited to email, with the more in depth stuff here on the blog. Any thoughts?

These are just some of the ideas I came away with. I also have a huge list of topics and questions you suggested, which is so so awesome and useful.

So what do you guys think? Does this sound like a good direction for the blog?

All looks great. And, if as part of your curtain making frenzy you fancy putting up a tutorial on how to make lined roman blinds, I’d be very appreciative (a very stupid promise to my mother)

Miriana, I’m making my mother 3 Roman shades for a very wide window. I am using Singer’s “Sewing for the Home.” The book has very clear photos of how to make lined shades. (like Colette for home dec!) If you can’t find it at the library, let me know, I have an extra copy!

I love roman shades. I’m planning to make several for our living room and bedroom. I’ve purchased almost all the supplies, but that’s as far as it’s gotten!

I just made five Roman shades of various sizes using a combination of approaches. To do the lining, I combined a couple of approaches. Basically, cut the lining one inch narrower than your finished width measurement, and cut the face fabric three inches wider than your finished width measurement. Put the panels right sides together and match up the sides. Stitch them together, along both sides of the shade but not the top or bottom, with a half inch seam allowance. Press the seam flat, then press the seam allowances toward the face fabric. Then turn the shade right side out and lay it on the ironing board lining side up. The face fabric should be creeping around to the lining side 1 inch on each side – this keeps the lining from showing and makes it finish really nicely. Press the shade, pressing a crease into both sides, centering the lining section so there’s that inch of face fabric going along either side. Otherwise it’s basically the same as making an unlined shade.

Personally, I’ve sworn that once I finish this project for my mom (one more to go, after 5 tucked roman shades, 1 floppy roman shade, and two tailored linen curtains thus far), I’m never making a roman shade again! They’re fussy and tedious. *shudder*

I’d agree with a lot of the comments above – tutorials and snippets are both great, but a better way to find the tutorials would be handy. I also love all your historical pieces focusing on designers of the past so I’d like to keep seeing those. One minor thing I have trouble with on the blog (and I’m not sure if this is a browser thing) is that with most blogs when I open them up there is the option to click through to the previous or following post somewhere near the top. I don’t seem to have that with the Collette blog so if I want to catch up with a number of days posts e.g. if I’ve been away from the internet from a while I have to open the page, read it, close it, go back to my browser feeder and click on the next blog entry there rather than being able to access them all from the blog itself which can be a bit frustrating – or am I being daft and missing it somewhere?

The fashion history posts on the blog were pretty divisive! Many people said they are one of their favorite parts of the blog, but there are a lot of other people who are just not interested in fashion history. So, not sure about that yet.

Good point about the next/previous post thing! We added that to our list.

Ava

July 29, 2011 #

Well…..gosh! If people don’t want to read them, no one’s making them! It really perplexes me when people feel strongly about a blogger needing to post less or not post certain things. Why not just, well, not read the stuff they’re not interested in?

Sarai

July 29, 2011 #

I don’t think anyone was complaining! I hope I didn’t make it sound that way. I asked for honest feedback, and some people aren’t interested in fashion history, so I think that’s fair. Basically, those people said “those posts are great, it’s just not what I’m interested in personally.”

Ava

July 29, 2011 #

Ahhh, nothing wrong with that! I’ve seen some genuinely complainy comments about bloggers posting-too-much/posting-things-that-certain-readers-aren’t-interested-in elsewhere, and it always throws me. It’s great that your feedback has been so positive! It’s nice when people are nice. :)

I think fitting advice is always super useful so I’d love to see more of that. Also if there’s any chance of a piping tutorial with cording, I wouldn’t say no! Thank you for all the free patterns and tutorials you guys put up, I think you’re doing an amazing job with the blog.

Sarai

July 22, 2011 #

Caitlin is working on a piping tutorial that will be up in the not too distant future!

I find your blog very inspiring and encouraging. I struggle with fit so that topic would interest me. Your proposed topics sound great! I have learned a lot from your tutorials so I look forward to more. Thank you

Sarai

July 22, 2011 #

I’m glad that you find it encouraging! It’s important to me that everyone feels supported (both by the blog itself and by the wonderful commenters).

Fitting is a big issue for many people, so we’ll definitely start focusing on that more.

I’m excited to hear about all of the plans, even though I have to say, I do like you just the way you are!

Awww, thanks Lisa!

These sound like great changes and I can’t wait to see the new layout. Any chance you could include a section on how and why you guys pick certain fabric. This one area is what is keeping me from turning out pieces I’d actually wear!

Sarai

July 22, 2011 #

Oh yes, fabric was a huge topic that people had questions about! We’re going to talk more about that. I also have another project I’m working on that should help, but I’ll talk more about that later!

Totally love your blog! Would love to see more tutorials though. Loving the free pattern – going to look for fabric tomorrow for the cami top. Would love to see some behind the scenes and projects that you are all working on. Keep up the fabulous-ness! xox

Sarai

July 22, 2011 #

I’m so glad people are interested in behind the scenes type stuff! I’m never sure how much of that to post… but now we have some ideas for posts that I think will be both interesting and helpful / applicable!

Thank you so much for the update on the survey. It is always interesting to see the overall results after taking such a survey-we all want to know if others agreed or not with our own personal take. I love this site, and the patterns, though I do have trouble fitting them to my particular body. I am looking forward to more fitting information, and seeing finished products that others have made.

Cinnamon, what a great suggestion about picking fabric! Yes, I need help with that too.

Sarai

July 22, 2011 #

I thought the survey responses were actually quite consistent! That’s always a good thing, since it gave me a pretty clear idea of what to do.

There were just a couple things that people disagreed on. For example, one person would say they want more debate / controversy, and another person would say that one of the things they like best is the lack of controversy! But for the most part, I feel like I have a much better idea of what’s helpful for everyone reading.

On the comments, some blogs allow you to reply to a specific comment. Then your reply, or your readers reply to another reader appears directly below and connected to the comment. It is a really nice feature that keeps the conversation going and coherent. http://pattythesnugbug.com/ has this feature on her comments.

Sarai

July 22, 2011 #

We actually have this feature already! There’s a link at the bottom left of each comment that says “reply to this comment.”

Obviously, it’s not clear enough, since it’s just text. I’m sure many people miss it! I’ll work on making this more clear in the new design.

I think the direction you’re going in sounds great! I’m glad you’re going to be including peeks into your design process, fabric choices, personal sewing, etc. That stuff is really interesting to me… I enjoy your blog and love your designs! Looking forward to more :)

I love seeing on other blogs all the different ways your wonderful patterns have been interpreted! I would like to see a blog tour now and then, and I think this would be of interest to others. I have bought many of the patterns only after seeing them on other blogs. They look lovely on the Colette site of course, but it was only after seeing other interpretations that I was able to envision them fitting into my life so well.

July 22, 2011 #

Love all your ideas! Especially sneak peeks at upcoming patterns, pattern tutorials and sizing issues. I really hope you address petite sizing and how to make colette patterns fit well for small height and body structure! Don’t know where to begin as a new sewer at 5’1 and 110 lbs. :( And I LOVE your patterns!!!

Alex

July 22, 2011 #

Oh, good point! I am actually the exact same height and weight as Krystle. I’ve made two dresses from your patterns (which I love, of course) )and had a lot of fitting to do in the upper chest and shoulders. My measurements fit perfectly into a Colette size 2… but my body does not. I realize it would be difficult to address fitting issues that no one in the studio has to deal with themselves, but it sure would be helpful.

I’m excited to see the blog changes!

Jessica

July 28, 2011 #

I agree with both Alex and Krystle about fitting to petite bodies. I realize that’s not the body type that Colette Patterns is drafted for, but the thing that keeps putting me off buying patterns is knowing that I’ll have to do a SBA and being absolutely intimidated by that (OK I admit, it puts me off from buying EVERYTHING. I’ve certainly bought a couple dress patterns figuring I’ll get around it somehow)

Perhaps, if you’re addressing fitting issues, you could use one of your patterns as an example and show how to modify that dress pattern to a smaller body frame? Like Krystle my measurements match CP but my body does not.

Just a thought =).

I love all of the ideas! I’m excited to see the new blog design and features and especially what you lovelies are working on for yourselves. I just finished the Cinnamon dress – love at first fitting :) Keep up the fabulous work!

Those are all excellent changes and ideas! Your blog is definitely one of my favs, but incorporating a gallery and a better way to find tutorials would be awesome! I also really like the idea of sneak peeks and sewalongs… :)

Since the survey was regarding the blog, I didn’t mention http://www.craftsy.com. But since you are exploring options for videos, you may want to consider teaching an online course. I took my first class on it, Sew Retro, and loved it! There were 15 videos taking you thru the construction of a bombshell dress. You can take notes, ask questions, bookmark sections of the video to come back too. It is brillant! I only wish there were more sewing classes to take. I would love to take a course on the construction of one of your more difficult patterns as I am a beginner seamstress.

I just love your blog. It’s well-edited, focused, and with a specific aesthetic and point of view. I value your consistency, it means I can always trust that you’re giving readers the highest quality content and inspiration.

I would love Love LOVE to see more fitting work in the construction of your patterns. Wouldn’t it be interesting to do a sew-along with three or four women of different sizes and shapes all contributing posts? Each of them would tackle different fitting issues throughout the sew along, and each could perhaps also tackle different design elements (piping, pockets, finishes, etc.) throughout, so that in the end, the one sew-along would cover such a wide variety of both fitting, sewing, and design tutorials. It would be so comprehensive!

I can’t wait to see what you unveil for us! Thanks for keeping your readers in mind.

Sounds like you’re going to have more of everything – so great. I really like everything you do, though if I had to prioritize I would pick fitting issues, alterations and embellishments to specific Colette patterns, reader projects and design inspiration. I look forward to the new blog changes. And thanks for the coupon! I just got my new patterns in the mail and hope to start working on them very soon. (Just a few baby-pounds to go first.)
