Detail Inspiration: A dotty neckline

I’ve been all about the embroidery lately. But this one really takes the cake, as far as I’m concerned.

I love the soft linen fabric, the neutral colors, the bound neckline, and the way the dots form a face-framing halo.

I think this would be lovely on different types of necklines too. Maybe for a summer dress?

Makes a relatively simple garment look fabulous. I have always loved embroidery on clothes, especially the Mexican style peasant dresses but this is a more elegant spin.

Ooh, lovely! I like that the embroidery isn’t perfectly positioned, as if by a machine. Much more beautiful that way.

You know, I’ve seen that design recently on two modern tops – so I guess it’s coming back!

Wow, loving the colour combo – then again, I seem to like neutrals a lot. Ah, embroidery on clothing…wish I could afford to quit my job so I could make and have fantastic looking hand-embroidered clothing! *lol*

This is very similar to some embroidery I was incorporating into one of my Laurels-except it’s 3 graduated dots in a line, worked in satin stitch with #8 perle cotton.

Thank you so much for featuring my dress! Your site is beautiful and being a mediocre seamstress at best, I’m so excited for your weekly sewing tips!

I did something very similar to this using paint on a Sencha make. I marked radiating grid lines with a sharpie on freezer paper and ironed it to the wrong side of my front bodice piece and then used the lines as a guide to freehand with acrylic paint. If I’d had good marking tools I could have marked my guides directly onto the fabric, but the freezer paper stabilizes the fabric nicely, and prevents bleed-through, so it is useful in this situation regardless.

There’s a knitting pattern out there which creates the same effect with lace. It’s really elegant. Here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/compass-pullover
