I like this style, could be good to help draw attention to the skirt area should you want to detract attention from the top half!

Yes, that second example in particular is much more chic than usual! (Never thought I’d apply that word to anything from the 80s…) What’s with the split in the fron of the bottom layer, though?

Yes, a tiered skirt which doesn’t add bulk is something anyone can wear!

I love the wonkiness of the layers and the addition of matching satiny parts. This isn’t 80’s, I don’t think. It’s completely contemporary. Lovely!

I’m not in love with the front split either though.

If you go and look at the pictures and description on the Etsy site that the dresses were originally posted from, the second dress is described as having a kick pleat, which I would assume is what that front split is. Looking at the length of the dress, and how narrow the skirt is, it would certainly need one, and for some reason, the designer decided to put it in the center front instead of the center back…

Yeah, I agree it’s probably there for mobility. It could easily have been made a real kickpleat (instead of a slit) and put in back, but whatever… the 80s were weird.

I love the bodice shaping on the 60s dress. It helps balance the tiers below.

Really pretty! I got to wear a tiered skirt a few weeks ago in a photoshoot and I loved it!!

Marcy Tilton has just made a new tiered dress pattern for Vogue that’s made in a knit that’s divine, in my opinion. I love tiers. I made an 8 tiered semi-full skirt in challis for summer that made me insane while gathering all those skinny tiers, but it’s great to wear.

I think they both would make lovely slips! A lady’s undergarments should make her feel special, and I think these would fit the bill!

I have a dress that has flat tiered layers like this but its made of the lightest of chiffons. (its a bought dress) I love it that it has that romantic layered look without making my problem area, my thighs look bigger.

Funny, when I originally saw this title whilst perusing other blogs, I had a horrifying vision of ’70s and 80’s prairie dresses or skirts, with those (what I personally consider) awfull, ruffly, “tacked on as an afterthought to make the skirt look longer” vision run through my addled brain! *lol* Oh, what a silly old fart am I!
These dresses are terrific – nice and tame, with a little vavoom thrown in there for fun. It’s enough to make me re-think my total hatred of tiers…wow, amazing what one little blog post can do! ;)

Have a terrific day everyone!

I love the 80’s dress with “wonky” (asymmetric?) tiers – it’s absolutely something I would wear. Dare we hope that this might appear as a future Colette pattern?

can’t say that I remember anything this ‘chic’ from the 80’s. Colette Truffle has that great semi-tier look

I really like tiered skirts. I was thinking about making one for myself but wondered if the tiers would look good on someone with wide hips or would it just make them look wider?

this is a good style for a shape like mine which is boxy and boyish. It might give the illusion that I have some hips even .
