Couple Style: Antoine et Christine

Hey, men like fashion too, right?

Of course they do! And I think it’s fun to dress up and go out with a fashionable guy. So I decided to share a style inspiration post about couples.

Antoine Doinel is a character created by French film director François Truffaut. Truffaut created a set of 5 films called “The Adventures of Antoine Doinel,” which portray a 20 year span of the character’s life.

Doinel was played in all five movies by Jean-Pierre Léaud. Doinel’s lover and later wife, Christine Darbon, was acted by Claude Jade in three films. The photos I am using here are all from the 3rd film, Stolen Kisses, which released in 1968.

How do you feel about the aesthetic of the late ’60s?

Christine’s dress looks quite a bit like a Laurel, doesn’t it?

I love the look of a sweater with a button-up shirt and slacks. It can easily turn nerdy, but this green sweater is slouchy enough that the character looks casual and cool.

Just for fun, here is the photo of my boyfriend and I that inspired this post. Some people tease us about our style (my Mom) and some people love it (our friends). I myself don’t really mind that 20 years from now, I may look at this photo and laugh my butt off. We have fun.

Are you part of a couple with distinctive style?

She fancies her personal style to be quirky sophistication, focusing on the importance of fit while adding special touches of handmade embellishments. She is also a connoisseur of whiskey and nap-taker extraordinaire.

Love the pic of you and your boyfriend.
I would not say my husband and I have distinctive style, but I am sure sometimes you can tell we are from Northern Minnesota. Love plaid flannel!

Ahhh, plaid flannel. Stuff of my Portland dreams (literally, my sheets are green plaid flannel!)

“but I am sure sometimes you can tell we are from Northern Minnesota”

Thank you for that! I just laughed right out loud :)

My boyfriend tends to go for a pretty classic and practical look: sturdy canvas trousers, plaid shirts, sweaters for cold weather. I’d like to see him experiment a bit more though!

Cute! My fiance loves fashion as well – it’s great!

The guy I’ve been seeing has a distinctly… casual style. I don’t particularly care for it. If he’s not careful, especially if I end up as a girlfriend, he may find other clothes making their way into his closet. I need practice with menswear and I’d loooove to put some more attractive clothes on his body.

I really lucked out with my husband – he’s a fabulous dresser – he looks amazing in a suit, knows how to tie and tie and has extremely great taste when it comes to classic dressing. And then there’s me with all of my brightly colored handmade dresses and outfits. I think our different styles say a lot about our individual personalities.

My boyfriend’s style depends on what he’s doing that day – he dresses very chic and smart for work, but can do casual too. My style depends on my mood, but when we go out together we are usually well dressed. Sometimes I feel like I dress up too much for going out (in Alsace casual seems to mean jeans often), and I don’t see that many Zinna-like skirts that I’m into at the moment. Having said that my bf is often more dressed up than some of his co-workers too, so maybe we don’t fit in but we do go together!

Dearest Rachel, my ‘sixties’ perspective is rather biased, I lived it. Now I see the trends and design esthetics revisiting that era and it makes me happy. Specifically, I see more attention to grooming, the resurgence in the use of the iron. and more attention to accessories. One does not need go over-the-top matching, but coordination of color and fabric lends a much more polished presentation. Nerd-ism aside your photo is lovely and you both look so happy, your style, whatever era you choose should make you happy. And if you sew, well, the fashion world is yours to interpret your own way.

My husband is an artist and we go to a lot of art openings. What always stands out is that he and I are usually wearing very colorful clothing in a sea of black. I love it, and am happy to be the ones standing out in a crowd!

You two sound like my kind of people! As much as wearing black makes me feel grown up and sophisticated, I still always wind up wearing colors :)

I grew up in the 60s and have always loved the styles, although I must say I liked the architecture and furniture design of the era even more than the fashions.
I can almost guarantee that in 20 years, you will wish you had a million more pics of yourself now. You might be laughing your butt off at that point in the future, but mostly because you had no idea how adorable you are now.

Mid century furniture makes me weak in the knees. And I think capturing yourself at every age is important, for your future self and family alike!

My Husband and I often coordinate accidentally. We’re both fond of earthy tones and vintage styles. Lately he has been getting into different color pants! Red, coral, green, yellow…its awesome. He also wears bolo ties. I believe it’s the Texan blood.
