Giveaway! The Sewtionary

giveaway-sewtionary

I have a sizable collection of sewing books, most of them 50+ years old.

Most of them just sit on the shelf and are only pulled out when I want to grab a little inspiration. The books I turn to again and again are the reference books, the ones you can pull out whenever you’re stuck and find exactly what you’re looking for. They are like trusted friends, always there to help you out of a jam.

Tasia (of Sewaholic) has written just such a book. The Sewtionary is packed with 101 different sewing techniques, all illustrated with clear photos and understandable instruction.

sewtionary-giveaway02

sewtionary-giveaway03

This is an ideal reference book for a beginner, but I think it would be handy for intermediate sewists as well! Want to add a welt pocket to a dress you’re making? Want to change up the type of zipper you’re using? Need a reminder about padstitching? It’s all covered.

I use a lot of vintage patterns, so I’m often looking up terms I don’t know (like ruching meaning “trim,” or what “stiffening” is exactly). I don’t know a lot of the more technical terms, so this would be really helpful to just know what things are!

One technique that I’m constantly looking up are invisible zippers! I’m finally getting to the point where I’m perfecting the look but I always have to double check myself to make sure I get it correctly.

Where I am still a beginner, I choose projects where I will have at least one new technique. So I spen a lot of time looking up the best ways to do new techniques ;)

I always have to look up which direction to stitch for stay-stitching a neckline. I got in in my head that I was supposed to stitch from the center to the shoulder at one point and it’s messed me up ever since.

I always have to look up how to put in invisible zippers. Some day I’ll get it right!

Heide

September 12, 2014 #

I can’t think of anything that comes to mind right away. It all depends on the project. The last thing I looked up was how to hem scallops and face them.

Stacey

I’m a total garment-sewing beginner, so anything that’s not commonly used in quilting or home-dec items has to be looked up. I’m slowly (oh, so slowly) compiling some references to help me be confident enough to make clothes for myself, but severely lacking in confidence. And though I have a nice machine, it’s a bit, erm, temperamental at times (!!&$?!) which hasn’t helped. This book will definitely go on my Christmas list! Thanks!

I can never seem to remember the correct steps on inserting zippers to garments with linings. My brain will simply not store that info…

I’m constantly forgetting which hand stitch is which – I think my most frequent look-up is slipstitching. I need a good way to remember them!

I also have trouble remembering how to do a slipstitch, and other hand stitches. I keep an Evernote notebook full of clippings and videos which is usually a pain to refer to. I’d love to just flip open a book right next to my project!

Zippers are my nemesis – I know what to do but everytime I have to look up how to do it! I also find it handy when starting a new pattern to read the pattern and then look up the techniques as a refresher before I start.

Despite having made a couple of pairs of jeans and a full 5 pairs of Sewaholic’s Thurlow trousers, I have so much trouble remembering how to do a fly zipper! Invisible zippers are finally starting to stick in my head, but the fly ones are my nemesis!

Suzanne Mills

I’m another one for zips as soon as I’ve looked it up I think why don’t I remember that of course that’s what I’ve got to do! It’s like I can’t recall the information when needed but when reminded can remember it straight away.

I’m always looking up how to do an FBA. I’ve done a few now, but I’m always afraid of deviating from the pattern and messing it up.

Alice

September 14, 2014 #

Just a tip! Trace the pattern bodice front, include grain, lengthening and shortening lines, notches, etc. and then cut and alter he traced pattern. If you’re only doing this to one piece it’s no trouble at all, and saves your expensive pattern.

Jana

September 12, 2014 #

I still always look up how to install invisible zips. I think that I might actually already know how to do it, but I prefer to have a little hand-holding, just to make sure.
Padstitching sounds intriguing! I really want to make a suit jacket, but I don’t think I’m quite there yet. So much fancy tailoring stuff that I have no idea about!…
Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the book! It’s been on my wish list since before it was even released, but I haven’t been able to afford it yet.

Nicky

September 12, 2014 #

I always find myself looking back at Tasia’s tutorial on sewing a hand-picked zipper. Even though I’m pretty sure I could do it without her help by now, I still like to pull up the page where it’s posted, and follow along to make sure I don’t miss any steps!! :) Thanks so much for hosting the giveaway, I’d love to win a copy of this book!
