Giveaway: What Shall I Wear?
Quite a while back, I wrote a little review of the classic guide to dressing by Claire McCardell titled What Shall I Wear?
At the time, many of you bemoaned the fact that it seemed to be out of print. Well, that is no longer the case!
The lovely folks at Overlook Press have sent me a brand new edition of this lively little book to give away to one of you. The new edition is just adorable, with the same original illustrations throughout, along with photos of Claire McCardell creations.
The prize
We’re giving away a copy of this new edition, plus a $25 Colette Patterns gift certificate to go with it, good for anything in our shop.
How to win
To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment telling me about your favorite piece of clothing right now (could be something you’ve made, or not).
I’ll draw a random winner on Friday, Feb 8 at noon PST and edit this post to announce the winner. The drawing is open to anyone and I will pay for shipping (though you may be responsible for duties in your own country, if applicable). Good luck!

My favorite clothing item right now is a hoodie my boyfriend gave me for Christmas. It’s soft, cuddly and warm, and has a sheep & bird (saying “Sheep?”) print on the front!

My favoritepiece is this days a skirt (burda 103/10/2008) I`ve made, that was on my wishlist for a very long time, and made it out a fabric I bought 4 years ago, when I decidet that I want to sew .
The skirt fits perfect, and feels the same on me. I love it.

My favorite piece of clothing right now is a pair of thrifted green corduroy jeans. They were originally from Talbots, were in my size (petite too) and fit me so well, I can’t get over it. I don’t even need to wear a belt!! I’ve been wearing them like crazy since it has been so cold. The fact that I paid $3 for them makes it even better!

My favourite piece of clothing right now is probably the jeans I’m wearing right now. I got them on sale a couple of weeks ago. In the store, I wasn’t quite sure about the fit, but now that I have them on in the comfort of my own home, I absolutely love them. They fit so well that I could live in them! And they are grey denim, a jeans colour I’ve never owned before. <33333

Right now my favorite item of clothing is a 40’s inspired blouse that I designed. I’ve made 2 of them now and have plans to make at least another 2…. or 5… lol I think I’m in love with this shirt. I think I’m even going to try to size it up and make one for my grandmother. My favourite piece of clothing is probably my Manu cardigan, pattern designed by Kate Davies. I wear it at least twice a week and love the design features and shape of it. Such a useful piece of clothing.

How nice! I was in Providence, RI a few weeks ago and spent an afternoon in the RISD museum — can you believe they had TWO Claire McCardell dresses on display? I sketched one of them on my museum map because the lines were just so lovely. (And of course there were pockets!)
My favorite piece of clothing right now is a Vogue 8772 blouse I made last summer and have been wearing once a week ever since. (I wanted a bow blouse, but I didn’t have quite enough fabric — so I kept the bow and made simple 3/4 sleeves gathered with elastic at the hem instead of a real cuff.) I finished it nicely with French seams and tiny shell buttons and it fits well, but I think the real reason I love it is the fabric: black & white polka-dotted silk cotton lawn from Hart’s Fabric. It flows, drapes, and yet still has structure — I wish I had purchased so much more than a measly 1.5yds!

This did and does sound like an interesting read!
My most-loved garnment at the moment is a cardigan I knit based on the famous shalom cardigan pattern. I added lengh, shaping, buttonholes and long sleeves and it now keeps me nice and warm riding my bike in yucky weather like this. Underneath a raincoat of course. And if the wool gets wet I believe I can still smell a hint of sheep..

I have an obsession with 1970s pleated bias wool plaid skirts. I always buy them whenever I find them on my thrifting adventures – I just can’t resist! I found one not long ago that I love above all the others. It’s made from the most amazing jewel-toned plaid wool and I’ve been wearing it constantly this winter!

I’m embarrassed to think how frequently and for how many years, I’ve worn my denim skirt made from a McCall’s pattern, 3 gores in the front with a flat waistband, 3 gores in the back with a covered elastic waistband. I have it on this morning with a sweatshirt. I wore it to the dentist last week with a button down blouse tucked in and a cardigan. On my last birthday, I wore it out to dinner with a nicer T-top.
If I was stranded on a desert island with only one skirt……..

My favourite item of clothing is my giant black fluffy coat. I bought it at a charity shop for about £5 years ago and it has survived remarkably well. It’s freezing in the UK at the moment and it’s the only way I managed to go outside!

Right now my favorite piece of clothing is a high scalloped waist skirt 6-paneled skirt I made from Gertie’s book out of a beautiful robin’s egg blue bengaline. I just love all the details–underlined in silk organza, horsehair braid in the hem, hair canvas channel stitched to the waist. Beautiful.

Ooooh, a giveaway! My current favourite item is a high-waisted, self-drafted black circleskirt with big white polkadots I made last wednesday. It was super-quick (started at 9PM, finished at 11 PM, even with all that hemming going on) and very satisfying because it goes with almost all my bright-coloured knitted sweaters, it’s workappropriated, and the fabric is a silky cotton that doesn’t wrinkle too much. I still have some of the fabric left (which was a bargain – really, everything about it is great) so I think I’m going to make me a pencil-version too :-)

My favourite garment right now is a circle skirt I made from gorgeous bright printed fabric. It fits beautifully – perfect for twirling! But what really makes it my favourite are the memories, I wore it to my niece’s first birthday, and often wear it when I visit her. She loves to dance about and twirl in my arms, and it serves as an instant rug for story time.

My favourite item of clothing at the moment is a brick red jersey dress that I bought in the christmas sales. My favorite piece, even though I don’t get to wear it all that much, it’s a flower patterned skirt I made while living in Mexico. I used the pattern of a mexican folk dance skirt, which employs tons of fabric, but I made it knee length. It has crazy volume, so it’s not very wearable, but whenever I wear it my mood brightens and I want to dance.

My favorite piece of clothing right now is actually my first pair of full seat breeches.
They aren’t practical (not the fashion breeches they sell at stores right now, these are only really at home at the barn), but they fit extraordinarily well, the color makes me want to make a skirt in a wool blend the same shade of green-brown, and these are the first pair of breeches that do not make me feel like I shouldn’t be wearing tight pants (likely because they fit so well).

My favorite garment at the moment is a purple merino cardigan/jacket that I bought in New Zealand. The wool is lightweight but warm, and it fits snugly in the bodice, because of the shirred panels in the front, but flares out in a flattering fashion over the hips. It has a narrow shawl collar that extends down the front – it looks good over everything from t-shirts to button-down shirts to dresses …

My favorite piece of clothing right now is a grey wool tweed pencil skirt that I purchased off of eBay (I wish I could say a me-made thing was my favorite, but not at the moment, now come spring and summer I am sure that will change). It fits well (and I can still have layers under it). It goes with everything in my closet. It is really warm (which is important right now where I live).

My favourite item of clothing right now is the Jamie shift dress from the Burda vintage modern book. The reason is that it is the best fitting item of clothing I have made for myself to date. My muslin looked like a potato sack! Now it fits like a glove, and I am so proud to say I did it. It has given me the confidence to start working on properly fitting more complicated dresses, like the macaron and the parfait. I’m totally stoked! :)

My favorite piece of clothing is a simple 70`s blouse that my in-laws found cleaning the house of their friends parents. It´s sleeveless and a bit square. It can be worn with tight jeans, for a more modern look or tucked in a skirt for a lovely retro look. I´m definitely considering tracing the pattern to make more, it´s so comfy!

Great giveaway! Currently, my favourite item of clothing is my newest cardigan. I got it on super-sale from Anthropologie, it’s the perfect shade of chartreuse (which goes surprisingly well with a huge portion of my wardrobe!), it’s a great length to go with skirts, and has the cutest peplum detail at the waist.
Though, I’m also super-grateful for the shawl I knit myself several years ago now, because my work office is always way too chilly! Practical, warm, bright purple (I love colour!), really cute details, and I knit it from a free pattern (Citron, from Knitty)!

My favorite pair of clothing right now is probably my Ugg boots that I bought 15 years ago before everyone on this planet had Ugg boots. I wear them as house shoes, and they make me so happy each year when I pull them out. They’re so worn in, but are still in great condition. I have a pair of dark purple linen pants that are tight at the waist, flare out, then are darted in at the ankles – sort of an Indian design – and I absolutely love them. They are perfect for yoga, or any casual wear, and make me feel very funky! I have a Marcy Tilton pattern for a similar pair that I want to make up for summer, and I’m retrofitting a black rayon/poly pair of pants that I shrunk out of (yay!) into a similar pair, which I’m going to discharge dye into a mud cloth design.

My favorite piece of clothing is a red coat that my boyfriend gave my several years ago. Now, it looks old, but I can´t throw it away. I love the shape and its colour. In the future I have to sew something like that. Thanks for the giveaway!!!
