Giveaway: Win a copy of 110 Creations: A Sewist’s Notebook

110-creations-giveaway

To go along with our new Wardrobe Architect challenge this year, Beth of 110 Creations has kindly offered to give away a free copy of her wonderful planning notebook!

110 Creations: A Sewist’s Notebook is a lovely little planner that you can use to sketch, scheme, and dream. Use the croquis and accompanying notes to plan out all of your projects this year.

I love the idea of not only having a single place to keep sketches and plans, but a nice little record of the things you’ve made. I was thinking it would be fun to attach a photo of the finished garment (even if it didn’t turn out perfect) to each page.

How to enter

To enter, leave a comment and let us know how you planned your last sewing project! Did you buy swatches? Did you start with the pattern? Fall in love with a fabric? Get an idea from a photo or a garment you already had? How did it come to be?

I’ll pick one winner at random on Sunday, Feb 1st at noon pacific time. This is open to international as well as US entries!

PS: If you’d like to purchase the book, Beth tells me that there is currently a 10% discount. It ends tomorrow (the 29th) at midnight eastern, and the code is MOREFUN.

ETA: Congrats to Claire, who won with this hilarious comment: “oh you’re supposed to plan? That’ll be where I’m going wrong then.”

I’m all over the place most of the time andere could use one place to put it all together. For my last project I made a little sketch.

My ‘Method’ if you can call it that is fairly organic. I work at a lovely little independent fabric store and sometimes a fabric arrives and practically yells what it want to be (or perhaps I’m just halfway crazy!). My last project was a Deer and Doe ‘Datura’ with a gorgeous graphic black Carolyn Friedlander print, my next is an Albion Jacket with a pale grey & white spot cotton canvas. My plans materialize in my head but a touch of organisation would definitely be beneficial!

Sheer dumb luck. I had fallen in love with the pattern and was not really thinking about making it straight away but stumbled upon the perfect fabric while out looking for something else. It was meant to be.

Great giveaway! The last thing I made was a pair of workout long shorts, which
I made because I was tired of doing daily laundry and I had failed to find another inexpensive RTW pair in my size. Plus I already had some black supplex in my stash, so I was good to go. But for other clothes I usually get inspiration from rtw, fabrics, and Burda magazine. And blogs, of course!

Started with finding fabrics that are in sale/I can’t live without, and then find a pattern that matches well from my stash or on the blogosphere!

I started from sorting:
Found 3 favorite items completely worn out. Cut them up for dust rags.
Shopped my stash & found 3 knits of a similar shade of olive green. (Thread machine only once & sew all items.)
Ended up with comfy ponte lounge pants, a textured knit peasant style top, and a micro fleece hoody.
Worn much in sub-zero Minnesota.

I had made a dress that fit well, although some areas weren’t perfect. I had then found some absolutely beautiful fabric. I then amended the things that weren’t quite right and made the dress again. Needless to say it’s the only dress I’ve made that fits. Even my husband loves it (and it’s not easy to get him to like clothes) x

My latest sewing project was born out of necessity and a really cute fabric – I needed more bibs for my one-year-old, and found some super-cute pirate fabric. From there, it was just replicating our favorite kind of bib (and practicing making my own bias-tape to edge it with).

I am a novice knit sewist, so I found a top with the cut that’s attractive on me, found a wonderful feeling double knit and sewed it up! I have another pattern now with a wonderful garnet double knit that I can’t wait to cut into and make for myself – a dress!

My last project started with a pattern. I then google the pattern to see what fabrics others have used and get an idea of what I might like. After completing my muslin, in those same photos, I look to see how the fit resulted on different body types and if people had the same issues I had and if/how they corrected them.

My last project was inspired by some beautiful fabric. I merged two patterns to get the neckline I wanted together with the skirt shape I wanted and took out the seam at the waist as I thought it interfered with the fabric.

My last finished project is a denim pencil skirt with a high waist. I had an inspiration photo, and a piece of stretch denim in my stash. On top of that, it was Denim month over at The Monthly Stitch, so it happened! I’m pretty proud of the workmanship–especially the kick pleat–but it needs a little adjusting before I will wear it.

I usually start with a pattern — and/or an occasion. Last time, I was just obsessed with the idea of wearing a long skirt to a wedding, so I opted to make Sewaholic’s Gabriola skirt.

For my next sewing project, I’m inspired by my growing baby bump. Time to try maternity wear!

I let a sewalong push me to do my last project. I never made it past the muslin stage last year, though I had many inspirations pinned. I stupidly thought I could skip practicing welt pockets, as I did several welt pockets last year around this time. Wrong! I decided on the fly to practice before touching the fashion fabric, but still veered off course. Lesson learned! Had I owned a sewing notebook or 110 Creations, I could have easily compared the welts from last year to the current sewing instructions.

I just started my last sewing project. I’m one of those people that reads a lot of blogs, looks at a lot of pictures, and then does some crazy shopping – but never makes any progress. So this week, as I was blog-cathcing-up, I stumbled on the what to make if you’re a beginner post and decided I would just follow that plan. Now there is a sorbetto pattern all taped together on the coffee table, and some lovely orange challis hanging over my shower rod to dry (because I would never use something easy like… cotton :P) . And, we’ll see how this goes!

For my current project, I saw the pattern on Instagram and instantly fell in love. I say currently because it’s my first ever dress for myself and I may have bitten off more than I can chew! The pattern is my style entirely and I soon bimbled off to the market to pick my fabric with a photograph of the pattern on my phone & the measuring tape still hanging from my waist! It’s safe to say that this current project had absolutely no planning involved – a project on a whim!

I started with a picture in a magazine – carried it around with me for ages and finally found the fabric I wanted (NZ merino knit) and then the perfect pattern Collette’s Moneta when I was internet browsing a few months later. It took so long as I’m wanting to make THE basic go to dress for my wardrobe and wanted something simple that I could dress up or down and could easily add variations to the pattern and was very clear about exactly what I wanted and didn’t accept any compromises where I would have to just change this or make do with that. :)

I found my project on a Facebook sewing/fabric site. It is a vintage dress with beautiful vintage peacock fabric with the peacocks set in ornate oval borders. I am on a business trip to my company’s headquarters that is longer than usual, and the number of outfits I needed (I normally work from home) was more than recent weight gain would allow. I pulled a piece of brown wool tweed from the fabric stash for a pair of straight leg pants and a pattern I have had for a while but had not yet tried. The fabric cost less than a dollar at a thrift store, and had a few small moth holes in it I had to work around, but I was able to manage pretty well by ironing patches on the back side. I cut a lining from a bright sari bought in Singapore a dozen or so years ago. I was just about to add the waistband, but didn’t get to finish them because time ran out! But that’s okay, because my waist isn’t getting any smaller and I will have another trip before winter is over. I am proud to have chosen to make a beautiful pair of pants that fit my current body great, from lovely material and supplies I already had that were bought for a song!

My last project was a bra-kit containing both pattern, fabric and all notions needed so not that much planning required. When I received the kit I realized that the instructions weren’t as detailed as I needed them to be and therefor I had to spend quite a bit of time learning techniques before starting. Good resources are key for successful projects!
Usually I would start thinking of a type of garment and then look for patterns and fabric, or start drafting the pattern myself. A few times it happened that I bought the fabric first though I always try to know what to do with a fabric before I buy it.

My last project was a passport holder / clutch for my secret valentine. I had a brief of her favourite colour and patterns, and had to go from there. It was a patternless project and I sketched out how I wanted the finished project to look and worked backwards. Lots of math and sketches later, it all came together. It would be lovely to have a place to plan this all :) and to keep a record of whats been done so far. Thanks for thr chance to win.

My current sewing project was planned based off of fabric I had in my stash and my very small maternity pattern collection. I’ll talk about my current project, because the one before that was a box (literally, a box). My last project was fabric led. Bought a beautiful knit lace at Mood – black lace over blue. Knew I wanted a simple pencil skirt with the scalloped edge at the hem. I had a pattern for that, though I took it in a couple of times to get sleek fit (often cut out size larger as I’m afraid it will be too tight to be worn). Then I had enough for a very simple tank top which I patterned by copying a knit top I already had. Very pleased with results.

I’m going to tell you about my current project, the fabric was already in stash, but had been bought with something similar in mind. It’s cotton duck and is the strength layer for a pair of 1810’s stays. I had planned on drafting the pattern, but it’s school holidays and I didn’t have the space or the time, so instead I purchased a suitable pattern. I started with the intention of using stashed linen for the outer layer, but upon cutting it out I wasn’t happy with how limp the fabric was. I ended up going to my local fabric shop looking for something (I thought cotton) with a good stiff hand and a fine weave; I left with some silk twill that is beautiful in a subtle way. It’s not finished yet, but I’m taking my time and enjoying the process; the end result is going to be beautiful, yet subtle.

My last project (which I just finished!) was completely based around the fabric – I picked up a fun printed scuba knit at a fabric swap and wanted a simple design to showcase the complex print. I also only had about a yard of fabric, so the Mabel skirt was the perfect choice! I left the hem edge raw and cut along the edge of the print as a fun detail

My last project (er, rather, the one I have a few things left to finish) was planned with my husband, since it is for him. We bought the pattern together a year or so ago (it’s a vintage collared shirt), but I am tough to motivate when it comes to sewing for other people. So, I’m finally motivated to sew it for him, so I helped him look at fabric prospects online (I was trying to guide him to a rayon challis, and the options there locally are slim), and he chose what he liked from there.
Generally, I go back and forth between starting with the pattern vs. the fabric.

I love Diane Von Furstenberg’s creations. I was inspired to create a wrap dress a la DVF. I found a FREE (always a plus!) faux wrap dress online, the Sew So Easy dress and decided I would create a long-sleeved version. While shopping for some knit fabric at my favorite local discount store, I happened upon the “designer fabrics” section. And, would you believe I actually found DVF fabric! It was a perfect ribbed/ponte knit in solid black at $10/yd. I sewed it up for a work party and it turned out great! Best of all, I got a DVF dress for only $20 and it fits like a glove!

I usually fall in love with a pattern and stare at it for a few weeks until I find a fabric that I love. After I’ve made a pattern once or twice I’ll start to see fabric in stores that reminds me of a particular pattern and I’ll pick it up. Not a very scientific system but it works for me :)

First, I chose a pattern that would flatter my curves while I’m losing weight. Second, I made a list of necessary supplies. As I pulled items from my stashes for my project, I checked them off my list. I traced the pattern pieces into fabrics and cut. Everything was stored in a large Ziploc bag.

I packed around a twill I bought in Peru 40 years ago, waiting for the perfect pattern. Finally I saw a moto jacket in a magazine that was perfect for the Alpaca fabric. I usually start with the fabric; when I try starting with a pattern, I tend to get frusterated and try to “make things work” with fabric I like the best. So finding the fabric first is always a good idea for me! The latest project I have been working on started with need (I need winter skirts), fabric (I was given some denim and wool in blacks and greys, and a gift certificate that I bought corderoy with), and then I won Stylish Skirts in a giveaway just when I was about to look for patterns! Quite a bit of happy coincidence, really.

i have been mending for over a year. My pile is that big, many of the things for my kids or my kitchen. I haven’t felt the time or of mind for a long while to think about sewing for myself. Right now, I am planning my back-to-uni wardrobe. I totally reorganised both my pattern and fabric stashes over Christmas, so I am trying to be disciplined and organise my planning around what I already have in stock. I use MS OneNote to help with the planning, but it does mean I can’t carry my notes with me. With a specific pattern, sometimes I just open all the cupboards holding my fabric stash, and sit with the pattern in my hand, trying to see if anything leaps out at me – more of an organic approach! I do like the look of the 110 Creations notebooks though – I adore anything that helps me to be more organised.

I start with the fabric… always fall in love with the fabric first and then search out a pattern. Might be why I have so many tops in my wardrobe and not many trousers, its hard to fall in love with trouser material I find! (and that’s why the Wardrobe Architect series is great!)

Well the project I’m currently working on is a request from my daughter (dungarees). I made some for my other daughter last year but don’t have a pattern in a bigger size to fit the one requesting them… So I made it up, adapting the smaller pattern I have. I just went for it. I’m upcycling jeans for them and luckily it’s going well. I’m just using my imagination!

My last project was a regency shift (undergarment) made without a pattern, but with the cutting layout from an online tutorial. I started with a need to make this garment and a suitable fabric and just followed the tutorial as I went along :D

My last project was a request from my daughter. She picked the pattern and fabric. http://blogmixedemotions.blogspot.fr/2015/01/birthday-dress-vogue-1422.html

I usually start by falling head over heels for a particular pattern and then go out to find the perfect fabric. I usually cut my fabric on a slow evening, do most of my sewing during a free afternoon and then leave hemming and stuff for another slow evening. This works pretty well for me and I can turn out a dress quickly and without too much stress. This time, however, I’m starting from a yard of Michael Miller fabric that I got as a present for Newyear’s. A yard isn’t much, so I spent a long time looking for top patterns that would work with both the amount of fabric and its design. I found one, but when I’d actually traced the pattern, I found out that my fabric was just a tad too short. By now, of course, I’d completely fallen for the idea of this top in this fabric, so it was on to browsing stores nearby and then the internet to find some extra fabric. The store where my friend bought it was all out, so this took a while, too. Luckily, I still found some at a good price and it was delivered a couple of days ago. I still need some materials, which I’ll go out and buy today, and then I can finally get to the cutting and sewing. This better be the most flattering top I’ve ever seen ;)

My current project which I’m still finishing up was made using a pattern I’ve used before for a lovely comfy blouse. I found a silky daisy fabric when I was in London recently and decided on the spot that it would be perfect for this blouse. It was very much an ‘it’s meant to be’ sort of feeling.
