Have you heard of Project 95? It’s a network of small shops dedicated to increasing awareness of local, independently run fabric stores.

According to their website, 95% percent of fabric shoppers purchase from chain stores. We all know that isn’t good for local small business, or for getting the specialized selection we might want, so it’s great that they’re teaming up to challenge that!

You can go to Project 95 to find a shop in your area, or add one.

Since I moved to the South Bay a decade ago, Treadleart and Florence Fabrics have both closed. I am shopping at the Cotton Shop and SAS Fabrics before chain and internet stores. The small shops can’t supply everything I need, but I make a point of trying them first.

Shopping at independent fabric stores is an eye-opening experience. You learn how much the chain stores inflate prices to set up for a phony “sale”.

Hi Sarai! Thanks so much for mentioning Project 95 on your blog! It’s wonderful to have the support of independent designers such as yourself.

What a great organization! And it introduced me to fabric stores I never knew were near me!

On another note, I bought one of your patterns (Chantilly) at Bolt when I was visiting Portland last week and can’t wait to get stuck into it. The booklets are adorable!
