Weekend Reading: Soldiers, muslin tricks, and making friends
This week, I read this lovely essay by Courtney Martin on the romance of new friendship, an experience I’ve had many times throughout my life. It made me think in a number of ways: about the intimacy of female friendship, about how friendships change tone as you age, and especially about the difficulty of befriending straight men when everyone is coupled up. It’s a thoughtful read.
“In truth, long-term friendship is our lifeblood — the thing that remains when all else, including marriages, fail.”

I’ve got to ask this, is it uncommon in the US for married men to become friends with women? Because we met this lovely American woman and she went on a couple of activities with my husband when I was sick and she was amazed that I would let him do that. My husband has lots of female friends, they’re all really cool women.

I’d say this it’s a bit uncommon, yeah, or at least suspicious-looking, but then in America our divorce rate is right near 50%, so that probably doesn’t help either. I mean, these relationships aren’t founded well to begin with, so you’ve got none too confidant wives. Add in a few more girls and it sounds like someone’s not happy.
But then I know people who are totally cool with each partner having their own friend groups, so I’d say it depends. I think a stereotypical “popular, like football+cheerleader” couple might be like this, but a more progressive “drama/band nerd” couple would be more open.
Hope that helps!

I think it really depends on the individuals. My partner has always had female friends and it’s never been anything other than normal to me. And I like being friends with all different people too. But everyone’s different!

Ah, thanks. I really was wondering, because I have never met someone who thought it weird.

Re: Lesage beadwork
The last or second-to-last photo was a shocker – it’s so close to a real leopard! Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom was literally my favorite TV show when I was a kid . . . . my initial response was, Oh, no, they couldn’t have!
