Weekend Reading: Goodbye Worn, Wonder Woman, and the Bechdel test
It’s been an exciting week.
As you read this, we’re likely packing up the last of our studio in preparation for the big move on Monday!
Even more exciting, we have a new team member this week! Meg has joined us as our new inventory and office manager, so the next time you buy a book or pattern from our shop, you’ll likely have her to thank for getting it to you.
Since things are a bit hectic, I’ll save more on these big changes for another time and dive right into what I’ve been reading.
Weekend Reading:
- Sad to hear that Worn Journal is closing shop. You can still get back issues on their site.
-
“‘Wonder Woman’ was conceived by Dr. Marston to set up a standard among children and young people of strong, free, courageous womanhood; to combat the idea that women are inferior to men, and to inspire girls to self-confidence and achievement in athletics, occupations and professions monopolized by men.”
-
Alber Elbaz: “With the mirror, I look with my eyes and I look with the mirror, and the mirror most of the times tell me different things than my eyes. So, who do I listen to? Who do I trust?”
-
Films that depict women as fully human make more money, according to FiveThirtyEight.
-
Closed-loop textile recycling may be coming.

I always look forward to your Friday morning posts. Today I had the day off from work and luxuriously sat on my couch with coffee for a full hour reading. Thank you!

City of Seattle just started a push to get used clothes, bags, linens, shoes and such out of the garbage by coordinating locations around the city where you can drop them off. Anything not “wet, mildewed or heavily-soiled (also no hazardous waste, which around here would include oil or oil paint). Worn-out, ripped, and mismatched items are now collected and turned into new products such as carpet padding, insulation and wiping rags.”
It’s a start. Ask around where you live.
Best wishes on your move across Stumptown.

I don’t know how you find the time to put together such a interesting and timely posts, but I am so glad you do. Weekend Reading is what I look forward to on Saturday morning, that and my cup of coffee (or two).
Thank you, and congratulations on your move.

Spammers, unfortunately. :( I’ve had less time to monitor comments because of the move and they’ve been sneaking in.

Great articles – thanks for sharing. In the Elbaz piece I especially enjoyed the line at the end of the paragraph you quoted: “And I realize more and more that what looks good on the screen never feels good on the body.” Touché. Good luck with the move!
