The coming year for Colette Patterns

I’ve been thinking a lot about directions to go in the next year.

On a personal note, I plan to take 2012 a little easier than 2011. This past year has been a heady mix of rewarding achievements and obsessive workaholism. I’m glad it happened, but I’m ready for a little balance to return to my life. That said, “work smarter” is going to be my mantra. That means getting more help, and saying no to things occasionally.

So here are some of the plans I’ve been mulling over:

  • The studio! I’m so excited to be moving into our brand new studio. We’re going to take the time, energy, and budget to really make it a wonderful, relaxing, inspiring place to work. While I’ve loved our last studio (especially the light!), it had become so cramped and cluttered that it could be uncomfortable. No more.
  • Digital products. So far, we’ve only focused on print products (the patterns and the book), while offering lots of other stuff digitally (the blog, Snippets, free patterns). I’d like to expand the digital side of things and begin offering really amazing stuff you can download or print at home. While continuing our usual range, of course!
  • New partnerships. I have some ideas for teaming up with other small companies to work on new types of products, but it’s just an idea at this point. I know, that’s super vague.
  • Teaching. Caitlin and I have been mulling over the idea of holding occasional classes at the new studio, so we’ll see once we get settled in. Online classes would also be awesome, don’t you think?
  • Video. I really need to get on the whole video thing. We’re going to have a nice set up in the new studio, so hopefully we can plan more video production soon!
  • More help. On my end, I plan to get more help around CP World Headquarters. It is sorely needed, that’s for sure.

As far as the blog goes, I welcome your input! Of course, we’ll continue offering tutorials and tips. But do you enjoy hearing about the company? Seeing behind the scenes stuff? The styling posts? Inspiration posts? What about the sewalongs and palette challenges? Seeing the stuff I’m making?

I’m open to hearing your thoughts on any of it!

Sarai started Colette back in 2009. She believes the primary role of a business should be to help people. She loves good books, sewing with wool, her charming cats, working in her garden, and eating salsa.

You plans for 2012 sound super exciting, especially the part about digital products and online lessons/tutorials! I also absolutely love hearing about the company, behind the scenes stuff, inspiration / styling posts, sewalongs etc. I really, truly love it all!

I am really excited about the digital downloads. I have been having issues getting patterns here in Ireland and even the delivery time on the sewing handbook was crazy long ( 5 weeks after it was released). I was well worth the wait however, I am really looking forward to starting some of the projects this week now the holiday rush is over.

Sarai, your 2012 plan is amazing! Same as Marie, I am so excited about digital products and online expansion! I would like to hear more about fabrics: how to work, mix, treat different fabrics.

I love the class idea, specifically the online courses. I heard about your company via a local sewing show that you were on. Your recommendations and teaching style were great, loved it. I’m new to sewing and could use any instruction that is available.

Such inspiring plans! I love the idea of online courses and PDF patterns and love the behind the scenes stuff too. If I was nearer I’d be putting my CV in but a trans-atlantic commute would be awful, good luck in finding someone that complements your team!

i love behind the scenes stuff and company info – it’s always fun to be filled in on that sort of info.

getting help is definitely tricky, LOL! i can’t wait to see what else is in store for the new year…and a new studio is awesome!!!

Online classes sound very exciting, I would definately be up for taking part.
I love your blog, I think you actually have a very good balance between inspirational post (I include sew-a-longs and palette chalenges here) and more day to day stuff surrounding CP.
Love the book! I think you have earned an easier 2012 !!!
Good luck with all your plans, here’s wishing all at CP a happy, healthy and prosperous 2012 X

I love video/DVD classes. I’ve bought a few because there are only a few available. Most are for beginner sewers. I would love to be able to buy video/dvd classes that are for advanced sewers. I work full time and have a very busy life so don’t have time to go to classes but would love to be able to purchase them for home use. I’ve bought all of Palmer & Pletsch’s video’s.

The online courses will surely benefit all of us. This way we see you do it. Sometimes photos don’t translate well :(

Wishing you the best…

I personally love hearing about how your company is doing. The growth of Colette is sooooo inspiring. Not to mention both Sarai and Caitlin!!! I recently was able to partake in the on-line audio class- it was awesome! Thank you! I really look forward to hearing and seeing more! Thanks for all the snippets they are very informative and really helpful!

Great plans and yes, I love reading your posts. I like the tips and tricks, but the what’s going on stuff is interesting to. It actually makes me feel strangely a part of it.

I really like the sew alongs and palette challenges. I find it inspiring and it keeps me motivated to make more things for myself.

Congrats on the new space! You ladies are the awesome and I’m finding the book oh so helpful. Right now I’m working through the fit chapter and I think I’m finally getting it.

I love everything about your website and company. Your patterns are amazing (I’d love to see a classic shorts pattern), I especally love the sew-a-longs and your tutorials help me so much! I love reading your features on other sewers and seeing what they have made fom your patterns. You’re inspiring! Sarah x

Your plans for 2012 sound awesome. I wish more companies would make digital patterns available and books. I don’t have a lot of storage space in my home and digital patterns and books are ideal. I would also be really excited to take an online course from you and your team. Since I live across the country, I would miss out on the classes in the studio. I have enjoyed online classes at http://www.craftsy.com/ this year. I can watch the classes, take notes, and bookmark the videos where I would like to return. It has been a fun way of learning to sewing since I don’t have a lot of options in my local area. Good luck to you and Happy New Year.

I really like the changes you made to the blog last year and hope that it will continue in the same manner. I’m also excited to see what you have in store for downloads because I’m terribly impatient when it comes to the mail. Happy New Year!

Melanie

January 3, 2012 #

Sounds like an exciting 2012 ahead and I hope you get the balance just right for you.

I’ve taken the plunge in to sewing and treated myself to your Handbook as an incentive to get me going because one of my aims for 2012 is to create a ‘slow’ wardrobe; making and purchasing garments that use quality materials, rather than cheap, quick and, more often than not, poorly made items. I’m cutting out the fabric for Meringue tonight!

Your idea about online videos would be ideal as sometimes I need to ‘see it’ to get it! Downloads and more sewalongs would also be useful – especially from your book!

January 3, 2012 #

I love your blog! And Snippets is awesome, too. You are a wonderful teacher. Yes! I love the Styling posts!! Oh and an online course would be great. I have your book and can’t wait to start sewing from it. Keep up the great work, girl!!

I am soo excited for this coming year! I would be interested to see some more tutorials on how to make some changes to your patterns. Every idea sounds great! Can’t wait!

January 3, 2012 #

Yes, the downloads idea is very exciting, both things paid and things free. :) I think the videos would also be very very helpful, with technique demonstration, etc. I always love to see what you are sewing too. It is really fun to see the behind the scenes stuff. I haven’t taken any of the classes on craftsy, but I have looked at it and it does seem like a really functional platform for the classes. Good luck in the next year! I think you have some great ideas for ways you could still have lots of new and exciting things while keeping it less overwhelming for you. Have fun and good luck!

I’d lurve online classes – and videos – and hope you go ahead with those.

I’m not so sure about digital downloads – if you do offer them, I hope they won’t replace printed patterns. I hate the hassle of putting bits together and haven’t used any of Burdastyle’s free downloads – I only overcame my dislike after seeing Mena’s seven sorbettos – and that was not many bits of paper. Still, I felt I couldn’t align them perfectly and that my result wasn’t going to be top notch. Sorry to sound negative – I know there were some very positive responses to that proposal – but my heart sank – I just really hope it won’t replace the print ones. Maybe you could offer your patterns in both formats? Just to expand on this – in Malta, we don’t have copyshops that print out patterns in whole format – I tried it at Xerox and ended up paying €25 for a jacket printed on stuff that was practically cardboard. And they weren’t even sure that it was at a perfect 100%!

I’ve bought digital magzines from Interweave – not a total dinosaur! – but when you work at a desk all day long, the last thing you want is to read books on computers. So I haven’t bought any digital books – I already have a tendency to laptop neck, and don’t want to end up with a dowager’s hump when I’m old!

Kenn

January 3, 2012 #

Don’t worry Francesca, our printed patterns are definitely not going anywhere. Any digital patterns we do will be in addition to the traditional printed versions.

Francesca

January 6, 2012 #

Phew! Thanks for that Kenn!

I’m very much looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us this year! This is a delightful community you’ve gathered here, and I’m so excited to be part of it all year this year! I was too late to the party to join in on any sewalongs or palette challenges in 2011, but I’ve already begun thinking of ideas for my spring palette/mood board for this year so you better believe I’m gonna be part of it this time!

I think online classes would be nice for those of us not lucky enough to live close enough for live ones. I also like the idea of digital downloadable patterns and other things, but to be honest?? I REALLY prefer printed material. I adore your patterns, the aesthetic, love and care with which they are printed, and ever since I got your book I swear I’ve read it through at least half a dozen times, and I refer to it every day for one thing or another, whether it be for reference on how to do something, or just for inspiration. I gotta say, that has to be my favourite thing Colette so far – so I will always support and encourage the continuation of more printed work from you :)

January 3, 2012 #

I am so thrilled for you and your team. It has been fun to watch the rise of the company and know that my small purchases helped fuel it. Love the idea of downloads of PDF files, though your booklets are so loved throughout the sewing community, so I would be sad to NOT have that option. I would love to see a sewing retreat offered in the Portland area, or even Bend. I do not think I’d attend classes if they were focused on beginning sewing, but would certainly support an intermediate or advanced retreat.

Sarai

January 3, 2012 #

I’ve thought about retreats, especially since there are sooo many lovely spots to hold something like that in Oregon. My experience with event planning is that it takes a lot more work than it seems on the surface, so I’d have to be careful to add something like that into the mix without some extra help. :)

January 3, 2012 #

I’ve really enjoyed the content on your blog this year, as well as the lovely book I got for Christmas, yaaay!

As for what I’d like to see – I’m a big fan of the old digital marketing so I’m excited to see how you’ll expand the site. Online sewing classes would be lovely – akin to Gertie’s bombshell tutorials perhaps – especially for us here in the UK!

Looking forward to what you’ll do in 2012 :)

Sarah

January 3, 2012 #

Yes, yes to online sewing classes! I can’t get to Portland but still would love the chance to learn from you and Caitlin.

Yes, to all of your posting suggestions! I love to read about what you two are up to, what’s going on behind the scenes, etc. The styling ones are great, too.

Jess

January 3, 2012 #

YES!! I love everything you have suggested and can’t wait for 2012 to fully kick in. Sounds like exciting things are afoot for you all :) I personally find it very interesting to read and see things related to your company! Keep up the amazing work you have been doing!

Amanda

January 3, 2012 #

Ohh! Online sewing courses sound an absolute treat! I’d be very interested in those. The blend of tutorials/behind the scenes/featured individuals is what keeps me coming back.

And just to jump on an earlier bandwagon- a great shorts pattern for summer would be awesome *hint hint*

Happy new year!

Leigh

January 3, 2012 #

I have to agree with Francesca – I also work at a computer all day and don’t want to do it at home too. Please keep the paper formats.

That said – I really enjoy hearing about your business, seeing what goes on behind the scenes and I can’t wait to see pics of your new space.

My goal for 2012 is to try to do something creative every day. I have a new studio too, and can’t wait to use it. (Installing flooring this weekend!)

Sarai

January 3, 2012 #

Just to be clear, for the most part this is something we’re talking about in addition to printed patterns. There *may* be some things that are digital only, but for the most part those will be smaller or free items. The idea is more choice for everyone, since so many have asked for digital patterns.

I love printed patterns as well!

Francesca

January 6, 2012 #

Oh good, smaller items are manageable digital downloads:)… sorry, I hope I didn’t seem like a downer – I just go into tilt at the thought of having to stick sheet after sheet together….

January 3, 2012 #

Hi Sarai. I love to hear about your sewing AND the changes to your company, workspace etc. your new studio is teeming with possibilities and you get to keep the great natural light from your last studio. How good is that! I would really like to participate in some online classes. Online allows me to participate from Sydney, Australia. Looking forward to following you in 2012. PS. I also love Caitlin’s contributions.

I’m totally for sew along (I would this way finallllllyyyyy get to the crepe dress I am planning to do for so long). I am totally for the online classes and digital things also seem a great idea to me.
I am curious also about your company, the life of it, the future you all see about it….
And by the way, sweet 2012 to you all !!! I wish you a wonderful new year, may peace and joy be there every day, may music and smiles color your days. From Guyana,

I want to chime in and say I also love the balance you have on the blog content right now. The fact you have something new to check in on nearly every weekday is a lot of fun, and has me always telling my friends about the lasted thing you’ve posted. While I have enjoyed every single post, the one on fit was the most valuable post for me of the year. Thank you.

Your plans for digital prints is very exciting, though I have not ever tried using a digital pattern, I have been thinking about trying one.

**If I were to wish for one thing for the coming year it would be a package of sleeve pattern styles (long sleeve, cuffed, etc.) that would fit your blouses and dresses interchangably, like I’ve seen in vintage patterns.**

Francesca

January 6, 2012 #

Autumn, I looove this idea! Brilliant!

Kristina

January 3, 2012 #

I really have enjoyed the new blog. I especially like the tutorials and behind-the-scenes posts. Honestly–I usually skip over the “styling” and “fashion palette” posts, not because I don’t enjoy y’all’s aesthetic, but because I figure if I can’t come up with a way for a pattern/garment to fit into my lifestyle on my own, that usually means I should get something else!

Like Francesca, I also greatly prefer printed patterns, but I know I’m probably in the minority. If something is cute enough and simple enough to print on a regular printer and put together, I’ll consider it.

Happy New Year! Keep being great!

(Also–I really like your nail polish in that photo. SWEET.)

I love the mix on your blog–the back story of your company, the sew alongs, the pictures of others’ work. More of the same, I say. And for a personal pattern request, might you consider a jacket?

Melanie

January 4, 2012 #

I love the style posts and would love to see more, especially some more casual options. I also love learning about how you develop your business. The tips, tutorials and adjustments are all very very useful! I would like to know more about choosing the correct size in Colette patterns and how the fit is designed. I also can’t wait to see your new studio. Sewing classes seem like a genius idea and are just another reason I’m jealous of people who live in Portland! I participated in your fabric webinar, though, and found it very useful. Maybe that kind of format would work for distance learning? Or should I just move to Portland? :)

January 4, 2012 #

It is remarkable what y’all have accomplished in the last year! I am so happy for you and so exciting to see what will happen next year! The beginner patterns seem to be doing really well at the shop, I’m sure any new patterns similar to that would be great! Virtual sewing online, brilliant! Do you think Colette will be at Quilt Market again in the spring?

p.s. more help?! does that mean colette interns?

Caro

January 5, 2012 #

I loved the styling posts! It was exciting to get new ideas because sometimes my imagination takes a break. Video classes would be great, like Gertie’s.

You’re doing a great job at everything! Your esthetic, your content (I personally love all the behind the scenes stuff, but that’s because we’re in the same industry and I love talking and reading about women in business!) and you have definitely inspired me to get away from the computer and GET SEWING! Which is the point, right?
I love that suggestion about the sleeves! My mom had a set of interchangeable cuffs and collars that she made for all her evening wear!
Happy New Year to you and Kenn! here’s to a less insane 2012!

Jenn

January 6, 2012 #

Sarai, I love the blend of topics on the blog. I especially enjoy how you style different patterns, possibly because I identify with your aesthetic so closely. Truth is though, I love to watch what’s going on as your business grows and changes because I am living vicariously through you ; ) You are living my dream, and I am so enjoying watching you succeed at it.
Also, I am thoroughly excited at the thought of downloads for smaller items–squee! Instant gratification! What could be better?
Happy New Year to everyone at Colette, and the best in the future!

Raven

January 7, 2012 #

Thanks for so many great things this year, and all the ones before; your book is fabulous, and I would definitely do the drive down from Canada to attend a class. If I could make any request, it would be a shorts pattern, and maybe a tutorial on how to turn the parfait dress into a romper (I remember a picture of you wearing a denim one from ages ago that was my introduction to your patterns, and sewing in general.

Looking forward to another year of wonderful creativity from this community.

Cynthia

January 8, 2012 #

I enjoy seeing the progress of growing your business, the behind the scenes, photo shoots and what you are making. Please move into video! That would be so helpful ; seeing and hearing the sewing process. Thank you so much for your inspiration! You have gotten me back into sewing after a long hiatus.

Digital patterns offer the opportunity to get a pattern quickly in a “sewing emergency.” And we all know about those. Keep it all coming. We are all thirsty for Colette content .
