Your feedback: New patterns more often?

pattern-back

I wanted to get your thoughts on something.

I’ve been mulling over changing our release schedule this year. Right now, we offer 2 or 3 new patterns twice a year, once in Spring and once in Fall.

I’m considering switching to releasing a new pattern every few months instead. We’d be releasing the same number of patterns over the course of a year, they’d just be released more often, say four times a year.

I like the idea of concentrating more fully on each pattern, doing photo shoots more often, and having new stuff to release throughout the year. But I really want to get your take too.

Let me know in the comments!

I like the idea of spacing them out more. It gives all of us more time to focus on one pattern and how it will or will not work with our wardrobe, style, and sewing schedule. It also allows opportunity to continually update our wardrobe with a new pattern.

I think it’s a great idea! When you release 3 patterns at the same time, I never know which one to try out first, but if they were released one every couple of months it would be so much easier to choose! Also, I want to say that I LOVE your patterns!

Kathryn

January 4, 2013 #

I like the idea of a new pattern every couple of months. I agree with Melanie that it would give your customers more time to focus on just one pattern. I hate having to choose just one when I go to the store, knowing that there’s a few months between patterns makes me feel like I have time for them all!

Shannon

January 4, 2013 #

I like that, because it’d be easier to rationalize against my sewing budget!

Julia

January 4, 2013 #

I think it’s a great idea. It stops me from having to choose which one I want to prioritize. In other news, I just ordered your book! Super excited to give it a whirl :)

Clare S

January 4, 2013 #

Well, in a dream world (for me) you’d release more of your gorgeous patterns more often! But in reality, where they actually take time and effort to develop and release, I’d love it if you released your patterns spread through the year. As others have mentioned, it would allow us time to work on making before you release a new one and we get all excited about that!

Helen Made

January 4, 2013 #

although I really look forward to seeing a bunch of new patterns being released by you twice a year, I think spacing them out more would be great as it means you can concentrate more on each pattern like you said.

Aileen

January 4, 2013 #

I think a new pattern every few months would be great. It’s easier to focus on just one and plan how to incorporate it into your wardrobe. Choice, though nice, can be distracting sometimes! Keep up the good work and best of luck for 2013.

Shannon

January 4, 2013 #

I would love to see them more often. Maybe release one and give a hint to what is next out in case there are pieces we should plan on working together.

Magda

January 5, 2013 #

ooo yes i like this idea. Release one pattern. but maybe do the photo shoot with the pattern that will be coming down the line…. even if part of the photo-shoot is a line-drawing/illustration.

Colleen

January 4, 2013 #

Yes, please. Do that. It is difficult to prioritize and then one never catches up.

Shannon

January 4, 2013 #

I think there are advantages to both strategies. I do like how releasing them as a set encourages me to think about how the patterns work in tandem as a wardrobe and how it creates a climatic unveiling! That said, you often use existing patterns in your photo shoots with the new items. Hmm.

Sarai

January 4, 2013 #

Yes, that’s true… I’d probably still show them together, and you’d actually probably see them used in a variety of ways and fabrics. Hmm.

I could also use more models, which means more variety in looks / body shape. That’s difficult to do with only two big photo shoots a year.

Holly

January 4, 2013 #

I really like the idea of you being able to show your pattern pieces made in a couple different fabrics, on a couple different “body types.” It would allow for more creative inspiration, I think.

Kat

January 4, 2013 #

Yes! I love this idea! One every few months, and the shoot with different body types!

Sew Little Time

January 4, 2013 #

i think it would work better to have them released more often to allow you to concentrate on each one more. you could potentially run more sewalongs and things like that too. for example, i bought anise and juniper at the same time, and dived straight into anise as you were doing the sewalong. i haven’t looked at juniper yet even though i have the pattern and fabric, but just lost the momentum!

also i think you might sell more patterns, if you have 3 at once, i won’t often buy all 3, but if you spaced them out, i might!

Lakaribane

January 5, 2013 #

I agree with Sew Little that it would be great to have each new release have their sew-along. And by that I mean, each new shape of pattern have a sew along, one each release individually. So maybe not a sew along for another strappy sundress but if you have a dress out with an alter shape or a romper/playsuit, that would be fun, IMO! And definitely different body types. I am Petite and hesitate still a bit to sew Colette patterns.

Lakaribane

January 5, 2013 #

oh, and more DIGITAL, please! Thank you in advance.

Sarai

January 5, 2013 #

Some of the models we use are quite petite, actually! I guess that’s hard to see in photos sometimes.

I’m very mixed on this topic, as I am thinking from both a customer and as a shop manager. As as customer, I agree that the Sewaholic method of releasing them throughout the year is nice, and I appreciate it from the patternmaking side of things that this would allow you to go big with each release. But from a shop manager side, this is much harder. As it is now, I can order your newest patterns twice a year and stock up a bunch and pay for shipping once. When it’s time to restock, I consider how close it is to your next possible release and time it accordingly. With the multiple release option, I’ve had many occasions where I order from Sewaholic to restock the shop, only to have a new pattern announced a week or so later after my order, which leaves me with the dilemma of either ordering and paying for shipping again or wait to order the newest pattern during my next restocking opportunity. I know direct to customers are the main issue here, but I would consider how to handle your retailers! Just my two cents Sarai :)

Sarai

January 4, 2013 #

Thanks, great feedback! I think there are ways we could mitigate this issue with careful planning on our part.

I don’t think it’s just about the direct customers! I know the challenges are a little different, but my hope would be that the same benefits (people getting excited about something new) would also positively affect the shops that stock our stuff.

Jennifer

January 4, 2013 #

Sounds like a great idea to me! I actually prefer the idea of releasing patterns individually and getting all the excitement going for that one pattern, rather than releasing them as a collection.

Lholy-chan

January 4, 2013 #

That is a lovely idea! It’s always exciting to see the new patterns announcement posts, if you space the releases out then there will be more fun throughout the year. And we get more time to admire and get familiar with each new pattern. Plus if it allows you to concentrate more on each one, I don’t see why you shouldn’t do it!

Evie

January 4, 2013 #

Whilst I appreciate the quandaries a single pattern release might cause for your retailers, I would love the patterns to be released individually throughout the year. I love being able to focus on one pattern at a time and fully explore the possibilities.

Rebecca Anderson

January 4, 2013 #

January 4, 2013 #

I like the idea of spacing them out.

Heather B

January 4, 2013 #

I think your new release schedule is a great idea. More photo shoots also sounds great!

Lauren

January 4, 2013 #

I like the idea of one pattern being released more frequently. It gives us more opportunity to be excited (because we all do freak out leading up to Release Day ;)), and I think it would also be beneficial to those who can’t afford to buy multiple patterns at once… it’s much easier to justify $15 every couple of months, than $45+ twice a year. Even if it does add up the same in the end :)

Miss Crayola Creepy

January 4, 2013 #

I like the idea of patterns being released more often. From a consumer’s point of view, sometimes when you release several patterns at a time I want to buy them all, but can’t afford it at that moment. It’s easier on the wallet to to spend $20 on a pattern every other month than $60 all at once. I’m basically echoing what Lladybird Lauren just said :)

Staci

January 4, 2013 #

A pattern every couple of months would be fabulous and as others have said, gives us all something to look forward too. Just like that favorite monthly magazine or wine of the month club! I adore your patterns and would so enjoy seeing one every month or so. Let the drum rolls begin!

Hilary

January 4, 2013 #

Yes, please!! Fantastic idea.

Wendy

January 4, 2013 #

I like the idea of releasing one pattern at a time. For completely selfish reasons of course :) That way I don’t have to choose which one to start with and I can focus on making one at a time, instead of rushing through one to get to another! I think it would also be more sew-along friendly this way if you decide to go that route.

Kat

January 4, 2013 #

Thumbs up! And I think all the good reasons why it’d be fab have already been mentioned, so I’ll leave it at this – yes, please!

Cheryl

January 4, 2013 #

I like that you think your photo shoots could include more models of different body types if you release patterns one at a time. I sometimes have a hard time deciding if a pattern will work with my body – short, busty, hippy – since it is not the norm for models!

I’m not sewing much now – but am totally keeping my eye on your patterns for when I jump back into sewing.

Kaci

January 4, 2013 #

I bet if you released your patterns in a more spaced out way, your sales would go up. When I saw the Juniper and Anise, I totally thought “Okay, which one of these do I want?” Because I could only rationalize the sewing time and money spent for one pattern for the next month or so. You space it out and it’s more of a treat. I can guarantee I’d have bought both by now if they’d been released two/three months apart.

Rochelle New

January 4, 2013 #

Yes yes!! I like the idea of one new pattern more often because then I don’t have to choose between two or three that come out at the same time! I also think this would give you more chance to have bigger photoshoots for the one pattern. I LOVE to see patterns made up in different sizes, colors, textures, and variations. I think you should try this release method. If not, you can always go back to the old schedule :)

Jennifer

January 4, 2013 #

My vote is for more releases every few months. Colette pattern releases always inspire me to get back to my machine and actually sew vs. just reading about sewing ;).

skyebird

January 4, 2013 #

Yup! and Yup! I love this idea.

Burke

January 4, 2013 #

Awesome idea! I’m willing to pay the shipping anyway everytime there’s a new release so I don’t think it would be an issue. And I get super-impatient waiting for months!!

Yizz

January 4, 2013 #

I often become overwhelmed by choice and since I love all your patterns, often look, trying to choose the 1 pattern I can afford. Then unable to make a decision end up shutting down the site and walking away with nothing. I know that given only the one pattern to choose from it will be much simpler to actually make a purchase!!

Carolyn

January 4, 2013 #

I would love to see you try releasing patterns throughout the year rather than in bunches. That way each pattern can get the attention that they deserve (and your amazing patterns always deserve a lot of attention!).

Soph

January 4, 2013 #

I like the idea of releasing throughout the year. Your tutorials/sew alongs could then be specific to that new item. Try it for a year, then reassess. Always pros and cons to everything.

jessica alvarado

January 4, 2013 #

i’d love to see patterns released more often.

M

January 4, 2013 #

I’d much rather have a new pattern more often. As it is, when two patterns are released, I have to choose between them because I can’t afford to get both at once. If they’re spaced out more, I have a better likelihood of getting them all as they’re released. And you’ll make more money!

Michelle

January 4, 2013 #

Hmmmm… I do like the idea of patterns being released throughout the year. It would be really wonderful to see each one receive special focus during the month or so following its release.

Michelle

January 4, 2013 #

Yes! I would love a switch to patterns being released one-at-a-time, rather than as a collection. It’s much more affordable that way. Plus, it gives us something to look forward to more often.

For example, StyleArc (an Australian indie pattern company) always releases their new patterns on the first of the month–I love looking forward to this every month to see if there’s going to be anything new I’ll want to sew soon!

Michelle

January 4, 2013 #

In that last comment, I meant to type something about how it would be even better to release new patterns on a regular schedule so that we can have an idea of when they’re coming. (The StyleArc example makes more sense that way.)

Jordan Elizabeth

January 5, 2013 #

I was thinking this too – a release schedule. Wouldn’t that help retailers too (as was discussed easlier)?

Mugsy

January 4, 2013 #

More release dates = more resons to visit your site even more often! *lol* I do agree, it would be nicer to see the patterns coming out more often than just twice a year, for all of the reasons listed by other commenters here – but obviously the final choice is yours, as this is your site and your patterns – and your scheduling of photo shoots and models, etc…
I also love the idea of using different body types for patterns where feasible – as well as older models whos bodies are doing the 40+ morph like mine *LOL*

All in all, you have a fantastic site, some wonderful patterns, and some terrific talent. Good luck in making your final decision! :)

Krista

January 4, 2013 #

I agree– More releases would be more fun and easier on my budget. (But I do empathize with small businesses trying to keep stock on hand–I’m grateful when they carry independent patterns.)

Gail

January 4, 2013 #

Another vote for releasing one pattern at a time, more often :-)

Shari

January 4, 2013 #

I too vote for release of patterns more frequently. I’ve only purchased one Colette pattern because most of the styling and presentation is too young for me. The one pattern I did purchase was due to another over-40 hobby sewer who used the pattern to create an age-appropriate look for my age demographic. I’d like to see you take extra time with pattern making and show styling for the 20s, 30s, and over 40s age demographics. It may be that you’re not aiming at the over-40 age demographic but please note that are many of us who still want to be fashionable and we’re looking for options!

Sarai

January 4, 2013 #

I love the idea of styling options for different ages! It would be really fun to see others contribute to something like that.

Jessica

January 4, 2013 #

Pattern testers! (If you use them) And in the selection process, aiming for a diversity of body shapes, styles, experience levels, erg ‘maturity’, etc. Or a roundup/showcase of garments that have been made up. For me, often what gets me to buy a pattern isn’t so much the photoshoot and styling (sorry, but it’s true), but seeing other people make up the patterns into garments that I can imagine working in my life. When designers showcase other blogger’s finished garments, that’s usually the selling point, because I get to see a diversity of interpretations and stylings. Part of this has to do with the fact that I have to keep “work appropriate” in mind when I sew, and most of the photoshoots speak more towards a glamorous, casual, fun look (which – who can blame you? That’s a more beautiful and inspiring look. Just not practical for me.)

So I have to say that one thing I love about the twice yearly pattern release is that sense of a “Fall collection” or “Spring collection.” However I totally get other people’s concerns. I don’t suppose you could sew samples or something with a ‘collection lookbook’ in mind? That’s probably not practical. But something to the mix-and-matchability effect, or, I don’t know, if you tend to design with certain inspirations that pull together a series of patterns, maybe you’d be willing to take us behind the scenes into your process?

OK, long comment, I will stop after this last one. What makes a pattern versatile for me, is not so much the ability to play around with accents and embellishments and contrast pieces (though fun). Rather, I like being able to make up multiple versions of a pattern that don’t immediately look like I have 3 versions of the same garment, if that makes sense. So, a dress that could be a blouse, with sleeves or a sleeveless option. A skirt that could be made up in spring or in fall, and due to the different fabric (and maybe a different hemline) aren’t immediately obviously the same pattern. Patterns are a bit of an investment for me, so I tend to purchase ones where I feel like I will get bang for my buck. Just throwing that out there :-).

Sarai

January 5, 2013 #

Oh, our testers are a variety of sizes! But they’re spread all over the country, and I realize not everyone wants to be a model and/or photographer :)

Annie

January 7, 2013 #

Hi, thought I would let you know that I am in my ..ahem.. late 40′ s and I have made a number of the Colette patterns – made 3 out of 5 from the handbook and a couple of blouses. I’ve noted on my blog . I think quite often fabric choice determines the “look” of a garment. The more classic the pattern the wider the demographic.

I like the idea of a single pattern launch throughout the year with sew -a -longs as a great resource and way of passing on skills

Andrea

January 4, 2013 #

Yes! And if you stick to a consistent schedule, your retailers will know how to plan accordingly, too.

aelith

January 4, 2013 #

I love this idea–no reason to tie your releases to the old/more traditonal? schedule. I say a more spaced release could be more fun and more practical, perhaps even more compelling as some other comments have suggested. Try it out, I think there is nothing to lose.

Paige @ LPD

January 4, 2013 #

This would be so awesome! Because it would give me a chance to sew as they’re released. Instead of feeling overwhelmed with new patterns when they all come out at once.

irene

January 4, 2013 #

I would agree with all the argument expressed here about why this idea of yours is excellent. Please do so!

Margaret

January 4, 2013 #

A rolled out schedule seems like a win-win.

For you: you get more publicity. You look more productive (I often wonder what you are doing between releases! You can vary the models more, and vary the fabrics also. See note about age appropriate.

For the retailer: they will know when your releases will be ahead of time to order. They will get more traffic into their stores with more frequent releases. Customers will buy more, for all of the reasons already stated. This is a total win for the retailer.

For the customer: She gets time to buy and finish one garment before longing to do the next release. Also, they will buy more. True, they can always just go and buy that pattern that already came out, but human psychology is such that we always want the new.

I can’t honestly think of any downside to this, except for the cost of more photoshoots.

Go for it.

Amanda

January 4, 2013 #

I’m in agreement with what most everyone else said here – space out the releases! I agree, it’s easier on the wallet at the time of release, and it helps budget time, as well. The only drawback is I like to see a season’s worth of patterns in one photo shoot, so I can see how well the pieces work together, but you have so many lovely patterns in the mix already that it will be nice to see how they work with your new patterns (example – I loved the way you styled the Meringue skirt in your book with the Sencha blouse). :)

I was just thinking about this the other day – I thought about when your next release would be due, and it made me sad that I had to wait 4 more months to see your new designs! :) Hehehehe..

January 4, 2013 #

I’d love to get some every couple months. it’s hard waiting only twice a year. Then when they are released I feel more overwhelmed. Having one every few months gives us more to look forward to and time to work on each pattern.

Karin

January 4, 2013 #

I would like to see updates on old patterns, new fabrics, adaptions etc

Samantha

January 4, 2013 #

I will jump on the bandwagon and say, yes to more frequent single pattern releases! For many of the same reasons mentioned: I would appreciate being able to focus on one pattern at a time; I love the idea of seeing various different styling/fabric/age options for any given pattern; and we’d get to have a more regular flow of Colette patterns over the year. Your patterns are so well thought through I can only imagine that the individual attention for each release would only improve the whole experience. Often I don’t “see” a pattern until someone else makes it. If the release had many different versions in a photo shoot, and especially for different ages, I believe I would better be able to “see” it.

Sarah

January 4, 2013 #

I think it’s a great idea too!

nicole

January 4, 2013 #

As a store owner I agree with Christine, I have had the issue of just placing a stock order only to have a new pattern announced just after, and, as I am based in Australia shipping is more expensive so I am often forced to wait until i need to re-stock again which means I miss out on the business. I can also see how spreading out the pattern releases is less overwhelming for the customer and perhaps showcases the product better. Perhaps have a release schedule so store owners have a rough idea of a pattern release date and can plan orders accordingly?

Sarai

January 4, 2013 #

Nicole, yes, part of this would definitely be having a consistent and well publicized release schedule for you guys!

It took me a while to decide, but I like the idea of a new pattern every few months. It definitely keeps my interest up.

I also really liked when some of your patterns were made up in fall/winter fabrics as opposed to spring/summer fabrics. Seeing your clothes in fall fabrics inspired me to buy your patterns and your book because I was able to really see the versatility.

More patterns more often!!!! (like a kid in a candy store)

Elaine

January 4, 2013 #

Ooh, I SO need to order several of your patterns, but have yet to do so. The idea of more patterns more often sounds awesome! Would you consider making a companion guide for the sleeveless patterns to make a version with sleeves? I love the designs of several of your sleeveless patterns, but need to have sleeves and am not great at creating my own sleeve patterns.

Tara

January 4, 2013 #

Yes. This. Do it. :)

Melanie

January 4, 2013 #

Hmm, I like the idea of concentrating more fully on each pattern. But I also really like the pattern support you offer now. I’d say either way you’re still a great company with a great product.

Maggie

January 4, 2013 #

I came late to the party, but I agree with everyone else. More frequent patterns give us a chance to focus, and if you do an industry release schedule for the shop owners hopefully they can coordinate their ordering/stocking in line with the release schedule.

I will say as far as styling on other people/body types, I do love your flickr photos on the bottom of each pattern in the shop. I think this is super helpful to see how other people treated the same pattern. Maybe you could pick a few to really highlight that span different ages and body types (and fabric?) to show the versatility of the pattern. Just a thought :)

kaitui_kiwi

January 4, 2013 #

Gosh that’s a tricky one! I like to see patterns released as a group because it’s fun to see how they were designed with each other in-mind, so many of your patterns are designed to go with each other etc…but I also like regular releases so trickling them out is a good idea…maybe stick with releasing them together but use that time in between to release the older patterns digitally?

Lydia

January 4, 2013 #

I like the idea of releasing the patterns throughout the year – this way, I am less indecisive and acutally choose a pattern, fabric, and project, and start to sew right away.

I also think that if a solo pattern had images of various models wearing customizible options, such as a wider skirt vs. slim skirt, different sleeves, various necklines, etc, it would showcase all the styling options — day wear, evening, summer wear, fall wear. The more I see different versions of a pattern, the more versatle and unique it appears as different people put their personal stamp 0n it — so to speak.

I also wanted to add that it would be so fun have a weekly ‘versions’ of a pattern connected to themes/ colours — the striped versions could post their finished pattern, the florals, an ode to a colour — maybe this seems too specific, but if different sewists can take turns ‘hosting’ a pattern, it may work — hope this makes sense.

Sarai

September 13, 2013 #

Jessica

January 5, 2013 #

I vote for pattern releases one at a time. Living in the southern hemisphere I struggle to justify buying a jacket or trouser pattern right before summer, for instance. I would love to see transeasonal pieces released in spring or autumn.

Signe Marie

January 5, 2013 #

I would love to see more frequent releases of just a single pattern instead of collections coming out all at once. Collections are great for actual garments, where color, shape etc. has already been decided by the designer, but from a customer’s point of view, there isn’t much need for patterns to come in collections. You are not bound by semi-annual deadlines for shows or magazine publications, so you really don’t have to follow their schedule. But personally, I would appreciate if you could publish the time consuming patterns early in the season and simpler patterns later on. Last year, the Anise coat pattern arrived too late in the season for me to want to take on a Fall coat (and it’s too short to function as a winter coat for me here in Denmark). I know you cannot please everybody, so it’s just an example. I love your patterns and can’t wait to see what you come up with this year.

Sarai

January 5, 2013 #

All excellent points.

Rebecca

January 5, 2013 #

I would love that! First, as stated above, I could rationalize my budget for patterns if there were less to choose from. Second, you would be able to spend more time and give us more ideas. Third, it would be so awesome to not have to wait for fall and spring! You should do it!

Pam

January 5, 2013 #

I’m all for it. Great idea.

Hanne

January 5, 2013 #

I’m not sure about this.
Since I’m on a student budget, sometimes I only get to chose one. When I can see which 3 patterns are released, I can pick which one I like the most…
This was e.g. the case with the lily and the hazel. I liked both of them, but prefered the Hazel dress just a bit more, so I got the Hazel first and when I got a little more money I got Lily as well… So maybe if a new pattern involved a sneak peak of what was coming up, it would be a perfect world :-)

Caitlin

January 5, 2013 #

I also love the idea of spacing the patterns out more. All of the considerations are there: more variety in models, ability to purchase and focus on one at a time, that burst of excitement when I get a new project to try! And a big part of it for me is that your photo shoots and releases, fun as I’m sure they are for you, are a huge source of inspiration for me. The idea of having that come more often, in more sustainable measures, is appealing.

Jenny

January 5, 2013 #

Corinne

January 5, 2013 #

Well, nothing like an opinion or two! So many very valid points of view. While I do respect the shop owners issues, I suspect you already have a way to deal with the timing/shipping issues.

I appreciate that the collections do make for great wardrobe building, but that can be accomplished with individual releases as well. As most sewists know, the fabric dictates the suitability of season, style and wearability. None of us want “orphans” hanging in the closets. Many years ago, (in the 80’s I think) the Vogue Pattern Magazine started a series that built on itself. I lost my magazines long ago but if I remember correctly the series started with a Spring collection. A skirt, blouse and jacket as well as a pair of pants/shorts if I remember correctly. Since your line already has such patterns in the collection the new release could be geared, fabric-wise, to adapt to the new pattern. You would be showcasing already successful patterns and illustrating how well they can enhance the new release. Midsummer, a few more patterns were added and Fall etc. If you choose your fabrics correctly in 18 months you had a complete and totally versatile wardrobe that spanned all seasons. The suggestion was to choose one light and one dark neutral fabric and build from there. The concept was great in that it taught us multiple options of fabrications without looking like you bought a 10 piece suit set. Just thinking out loud I guess, but that series was my absolute best inspiration.

Whatever you decide to do, I am sure it will be beneficial. Best to you in 2013.

I’m opposite to most of your commenters. I usually end up waiting for at least two patterns that I HAVE to have in order to save on shipping. But then, I’m in Canada, have a stash that literally fills a closet and my NY resolution is to get sewing on some of the grande ideas I’ve purchased fabric for over the last two years. This includes some Collette patterns and fixing a few things that I was too lazy to muslin and ended up with a wonky fit.

I’m also two hours from the nearest garment fabric store (so many people don’t make their own clothes anymore, but oh the quilters!) and even they’re getting to the point where they aren’t what they used to be. The store I usually go to got bigger last year, but that just allowed them to put in more overpriced, too skinny for only two panels for a window curtains and premade duvet covers and they are slowly but surely getting rid of the garment side of things. It kind of leaves with the online options and I love them all, but still have issues with paying more for shipping than I would for gas to get to the city.

Whenever you release patterns, it’s like Christmas – I eagerly open the announcement email or pattern webpage and then ooh and ahhhh over the contents! More frequent releases would be like having a mini Christmas several times a year!

Like others have said, it would be nice to see the new patterns styled with other existing or upcoming patterns.

I’m surprized, and delighted, by the number of comments this episode of The Coletterie has generated!!! I do like the excitement and anticipation of Seasonal pattern releases, and the subsequent wardrobe assessments, they seem to encourage. Still… Several Patterns released throughout the year, might, keep the level of excitement up.

Along with ‘age appropriateness’, there are 2 other things I’d like to see:
1) A 3/4 length sleeve option made available for every dress and blouse. Some stylish seamstresses have, age, weight, and/or religious modesty concerns.
2) Again, having to do with blouses and dresses…. How very nice it would be if you included a breastfeeding alteration that could, but not necessarily would, be added. Many young women are now breastfeeding into the second year and beyond. I applaud and support their commitment and dedication.

I can see advantages to both but like another commenter said I often group my pattern purchases to save on shipping costs and such. It maybe because I my profession is a buyer and I often have to take into account other variable such as shipping costs when I make a decision on a purchase that I also do this in my personal life.

However, I really like the idea of more photo shoots with a wider variety of styling ideas/options and being able to see the materials and information you want to use as far as marketing, display, tutorials etc on one garment at a time.

I would like to see you to chooe the way you feel will allow you the most time for creativity, inspiration and of course happiness.

would you consider increasing the range of sizes to size 24?

Sarai

January 5, 2013 #

Ola, I would love to do this. Unfortunately, it would entail redrafting all of my patterns because plus sized patterns have different proportions in order to fit well.

A bigger size range is definitely on my dream list, so it’s not lack of desire or interest on my part! I think it’s frustrating for a lot of people when they can’t find the sizes they need. On the other hand, not everyone realizes that making things in plus sizes isn’t just a matter of “scaling up.” It’s essentially creating a whole new line, which is mighty expensive. :(

Yes, more patterns more often would be great!

Pattern releases through the year will be very nice. Have your patterns to look forward to through out the year will be a plus.
I, too, agree that it would be super nice if your size range could be increased to size 24.
Whatever you decide that will be best for you is okay with me.
Happy New Year!

Patterns throughout the year would be much more fun as we could enjoy them one at a time. I prefer to work on just one or two things at a time so as not to end up with too much to do. Feeling overwhelmed is not good around here.

I am with the majority, patterns at regular intervals throught the year. It means the budget isn’t overstretched and of course something to look forward to. I often group my pattern purchases, but not always, and if there will be an option to download a pattern I can do that.

I get the feeling that a staggered release is a good business idea, just based on the fact that so many clothing retailers (Zara being the most obvious) have moved from the traditional seasonal releases to getting in a few new items everyday. This keeps the customer coming back for more more frequently to see what’s new.
There are many differences between the clothing and sewing industries of course, but they may just be on to something…

Scrolling through the comments quickly, it seems like I’m in the minority that would prefer fewer but bigger releases. I prefer to order more patterns at once to reduce the relative cost of shipping for each item and it’s also nice to be able to compare patterns to each other to see which I would like better.

I really like this idea. I think it might also encourage us to buy the patterns, when you release three at once and we have a budget you have to choose between the patterns, but if you release monthly it would be kind of like a pay day treat.

I say space them out and offer more coverage on each. I bet you’ll sell more patterns, too!

I would love to see patterns more often. As often as you can produce them. I would love to see a 50’s style romper pattern with an overskirt. Thank you so much for your contribution to the sewing community.

I would love to have new patterns to look forward to more frequently throughout the year. Plus it will be easier to pace out the sewing frenzy that ensues after each pattern release.

Love your patterns and your blog!

Cheers,

I would also love to see a couple of breast feeding options, or tutorials using existing patterns to adapt for this if possible. There are not many out there, and while this may not be your market, a bit of style for mums with feeding babes would be greatly appreciated!! I am another for the more frequent releases camp!! Love your work Sarai. Love the consultation and discussion this has generated. Thanks.

I’d LOVE for you to release your patterns more often. I do like the idea of your 6 monthly seasonal collections, but as several people have said above, budget-wise and sewing time-wise, to spread them out would mean I’d be much more likely to buy and make more of them.

I love the idea of spacing out patterns throughout the year. Especially, if one of the patterns happened to be a vintage inspired shift with cool details and a peter pan collar!

I am all for releasing a group of patterns seasonally. You can keep up the interest between the pattern releases by doing sew-a-longs – starting with the most complex patterns at the beginning of the season to allow us to actually make them before the weather changes again! As for what patterns I would like to see – more woven tops using minimal yardage (I know this is a pipe dream).

I love this idea – it would probably mean I would start and finish more projects, as it wouldn’t feel so daunting if they were one by one (plus, I get easily distracted!) x

Hi Sarah,
Did you come to a decision regarding the 2013 pattern release schedule? We have finally had a bit of good weather here in SC and I am itching to start a new dress!

Jeri Sullivan

January 29, 2013 #

Sorry Sarai,

I meant to also include that I am all for a monthly release schedule. This would help me actually get some clothing finished instead of spending all my time fondling and buying fabric that just sits on the shelf!
