Do you knit?

How many of you out there are knitters?

I learned to knit years ago, when I was in grad school. I’d wanted to make holiday gifts for my family and just as I was going to start, my old sewing machine finally broke down. While I waited for a new one to arrive, I taught myself to knit. The addiction took a quick hold.

I’m curious about the crossover between the sewing and knitting communities. To me, it seems like such a natural pairing. If you love texture, color, and textiles, knitting is the perfect compliment to sewing.

It’s slow, while sewing is (relatively) fast. It’s mobile, while sewing is definitely more stationary. It’s leisurely (usually), while sewing is more active.

And best of all, knitting can be a lot more communal. You can sit by a fireplace with a group of knitters and chat away while you work, something sewing doesn’t really facilitate.

Whenever I feel a little burned out on sewing, I find myself reaching for my knitting needles to get a textile fix.

If you’d like to find me, you can friend me on ravelry. Though I’ve been sporadic about updating, I’m trying to remember to post my projects there! Feel free to post your own ravelry info in the comments and maybe we can find each other?

(The sweater above is one I just made for my mom.)

I am a knitter! Sometimes, I just want to sit down and space out for a while (I am currently working on a scarf for my husband for Christmas……last Christmas-oops :P ) Really, I just love to create and while I spend a lot of my time sewing, I also do photography, knitting, art, and baking.

I knit, sew and used to spin. Knitting is my zen ( probably not a good use of the word). Knitting calms me and I too, couldn’t live without it.

So many people agree, and me too. I’m a long time knitter and sewist. I’m on Ravelry as Optimistic Crafts. One of my fall Optimistic projects is to sew a dress and knit the sleeves. We’ll see where that goes! But I love all things crafty and definitely think it is part of a DIY mentality to want to learn and do both knitting and sewing… and crochet, and needlepoint and…

I could never get the hang of knitting (and I don’t wear sweaters/don’t like thick socks, so there never seemed much point to keep trying), but I have recently taken up making chain mail. It works on the same theory, a nice quiet craft to do when I need a break from sewing. And as I’m sure must hold true with knitting, it’s neat the be able to make sorts of things that you can’t necessarily sew.

The knitting bug bite me hard and fast two years ago! I’ve been a quilter for over 15 years and in recent years doing more and more clothing. I love fabrics and yes I am a fabricholic – I will be a quilter til my last breath.

In December 2010 I walked into a new “knitting” store in my neighborhood, A Verb for Keeping Warm (missed your visit there as I was working). I wanted to check out the space and see what fabrics they carried. As I walked towards the fabric, past a table of knitters (mostly male) I thought to myself now this is an interesting site to witness in Oakland.

I spoke to the owner Kristine and she offered to teach me. In less than 30 minutes I had it. Took to it like a fish to water and dove in head first. I LOVE IT! It’s not uncommon for me to shift between knitting and sewing in the same day. I can’t explain it but both the sewing and the knitting give me thrills and I know I will die with a needle in my hand… maybe both!

She is so wonderful, as is her shop! I hope to visit again soon, because I loved it there.

I always say I having crafting bipolar syndrome…I am either all about sewing, or I’m all about knitting. Of course, when I am all-about-one, I hate the other. It’s good when I get sick of one project to switch to another!

I love knitting. I have not picked up a project in a long time since I have been addicted to sewing; however while at Sewing Summit I. Bought some new yarn and a pattern I am hoping to start real soon. I love knitting things for my son because they go fast.

Wow, I didn’t know you knit! I’m a knitter first, a sewer second. On Ravelry I’m Chiagu, which is the brand for my knitting patterns. You can check them out here: http://chiagu.com

I’ve been sewing for two years and knitting for one. Both are equally as gratifying. Even with all of the little mistakes, it’s nice to put on the finished product and know it was hand-made by me. Knitting is definitely a seasonal thing for me. I can’t even look at yarn during the balmy Kentucky summers. The thought of wool clinging to my skin in the humidity makes me cringe. So my knitting season just kicked off a few weeks ago and I’ve already finished a scarf and one glove. Jane Richmond patterns are definitely my favorite right now. Happy knitting season to everyone! P.S. love the cardigan

I LOVE that sweater!! I wish I knew how to knit sweaters, a knit cardigan is one of my favorite things around. As of right now, I only know how to crochet scarves and I am working on my first ever pair of knitted mittens. Hopefully one day I will work my way up to a nice sweater!

I came to sewing from knitting. I taught myself to knit 4 years ago and have been knitting nearly every day since then. Knitting garments got me interested in fit and garment construction. I started sewing a few months ago and am hooked. I have learned a lot about how fabric is shaped, what makes a good or bad fit, plus it is fun and satisfying to be able to create and then wear a garment relatively quickly. After the easy entry into knitting (a book or online tutorial, some yarn and some needles), I was shocked at the tools required for machine sewing and pleased at the amount of learning ahead of me.

I knit! I’m so glad to be back to it – I couldn’t for a while due to joint problems. I just finished an outfit pairing sewing with knitting that won a fashion design competition. Off to friend you on Ravelry…

Hi Sarai
We’re from the UK and have just returned from a wonderful holiday in the USA where we spent some time in Portland. I’ve friended and messaged you on Ravelry, but I just wanted to say that while in Portland I bought one of your fabulous ‘Colette’ patterns for my daughter, who has just had a baby girl called… Colette! Great coincidence for a girl who loves sewing.

I don’t knit a lot but I love to crochet! I do it almost everyday.
My Ravelry profile is http://www.ravelry.com/people/mimmaus and I love Ravelry, a great community!
I’m a tailor, so I sew everyday at work and crochet is something that is related to sewing but at the meantime is different.

I learned to sew from my mother and knit from my grandmother (my mom’s mom). I am primarily a knitter, but I can and do sew. I’ve recently started perusing some sewing blogs, like yours. However, I find I prefer the relaxing nature of knitting – sewing is pretty tense for me. And I have some things to learn about fitting. But then, having something to learn is a good thing, I think.
On ravelry, I’m Pam (just like most other places).

My best friend drove five hours and we sat and knit for a couple of days and watched the first two seasons of Downton Abbey. One of the most relaxing weekends of my life!

I can knit, barely, but I’m an avid crocheter. You can find me on ravelry as “Buttonwood Cottage.” I just found your blog this week (I’m learning to sew) and I’m so excited that I did!
