Opposites Attract

You guys have been giving Selene some major love. And in just one short week since launching Selene we have already seen a few (1, 2, 3) popping up in the wild. Here at Colette HQ this versatile skirt has become somewhat of a uniform. I asked some of the ladies to bring their versions in to share. Wallis and Sarai’s skirts are great examples of how different you can make and wear Selene. Check out their versions below!

What alterations did you make to your Selene to get a custom fit?

I didn’t alter Selene, just sewed it up as is!

What was the inspiration behind your version of Selene?

I really wanted a light-colored, highly textured wool skirt to wear to work. Spring can be a little tricky temperature-wise, and I wanted something to pair with knit tops and silk blouses that would keep me warm, but still feel springlike.

What fabric did you use?

The shell fabric is a basketweave wool that I bought locally in Portland at Mill End. For the lining, I used a lilac colored silk habotai that I’ve had in my stash for years (originally from Denver Fabrics).

How do you plan on wearing your Selene?

I’ve been wearing it with simple black bodysuits, a black wool turtleneck, or light colored silk blouses tucked in. Once it gets a little warmer, I’ll probably be pairing it with some silk camisoles. I think Selene is the right length to work with flats or low heels. I can’t wait to make a warmer-weather version in linen suiting next!

What alterations did you make to your Selene to get a custom fit?

I sewed up a straight 6 for this Selene, without any alterations, but in the future I would want to shorten the pattern 1-2 inches. I went up one size according to the size chart for personal comfort since I sit for most of the work day. If I decide to use a stretch denim in the future I’ll size down to a 4.

What was the inspiration behind your version of Selene?

Two reasons, I wanted to test the really cool lined lapped zipper technique, but also it’s a cute skirt! I wanted to sew Selene in a fabric that would be wearable year round, and a denim pencil skirt is so versatile!

What fabric did you use?

A thrifted denim for the shell and a peach skin lining with a bicycle print from Girl Charlee.

How do you plan on wearing your Selene?

I’ve been wearing it with a cropped sweater and leggings this winter and for spring I can wear tank tops and strappy sandals. The large notched pockets make this version my favorite – I can easily fit my phone and a lipstick with room to spare.
