Styling Meringue for Winter

This month I’m going to post a bunch of different ways you can style the patterns in the Colette Sewing Handbook. Today I’m starting off with the versatile Meringue skirt. It’s a fun staple that looks great in just about any fabric! The skirts in the photos are made with a medium weight cotton twill. This fabric holds it shape really well, which is especially important since those scallops need a bit of support.

I hope that these outfits give you some inspiration to try something new. I’d love to hear what kind of outfits you’d put together. How would you dress the Meringue skirt up or down? What fabric would you use to make the Meringue skirt?

I’m just about to start this project over the weekend, how timely!
I’m just making it in muslin first, but I want to make it in in really deep navy velvet.

I think medium weight cotton twill in a saturated solid colour is perfect for this pattern. Making ita true wardrobe staple. I’d also avoid traditional business suit colours like black, navy or grey but would rather go for mustard, teal, purple or electric blue, etc. Hence I prefer the first outfit with the red skirt being somewhat toned down by blush/pink coordinates.

Oh, I just can’t wait to get my Collette sewing handbook! I have a teal cotton twill that is just waiting to be made into a Meringue!

Caitlin, I really apreciate your styling posts.
I like the hosiery from the first and absolutly love the shoes from the second, but I would have pair them differently.
How about creating a styling thread for the colette pattern in the forum? Just one for all, or one for each pattern… don’t know, but I think there is something to think a little and to do here. Don’t you think so?

That’s a great idea, Pascale! Please feel free to go ahead and start one if you like, the forum is for everyone and you should definitely feel free to start topics like this!

Love the choices above, and especially the Polyvore link from Paige. I would use a deep chocolate fabric, paired with tights and either chunky mules or flat boots, a sweater and hat. Something comfy for traveling, shopping or lunch with friends.

Love the “monochromatic” outfit–that striped vintage blouse with your skirt in black is simply perfect!

I was thinking perhaps a lightweight corduroy in mustard or aqua/teal, with my gray suede Mary Jane-style heels and a blouse with a small floral print. I’d just throw on a neutral cardigan if necessary- I live in San Diego, California, so fall dressing is somewhat different here!
