It’s my birthday — Help me celebrate!

Today I turn 32!

As I get older, I keep thinking about how much I already have and how little I really need. Birthdays always bring up these mixed feelings, as people lavish lovely gifts on you.

Not that there is anything wrong with luxuries. They can definitely enrich my life. For example, I think sewing for pleasure and fun is very much a luxury, and one that I value.

But at the same time, I think it’s important to sometimes recognize how incredibly, unbelievably lucky most of us are. And that forgoing just a few miniscule nice-to-haves (like a few yards of fabric) can actually save someone else’s life. So for my birthday, I want to turn the focus from luxuries to necessities.

What kind of necessities?

There are millions of people in our world right now who lack one of life’s absolute most basic necessities: clean drinking water. There are people (often women) who must spend hours each day collecting water, and this water is often not suitable for consumption. It makes them sick. It makes their families sick. It kills children, it kills adults.

But those of us born into more fortunate circumstances can help. We can give up just a tiny bit of our money and seriously impact this dreadful situation. That’s why, for my birthday, I’m asking everyone I know to donate my age in dollars to Charity:water.

Here’s the deal: I need 100 people to donate 32 bucks.

My goal for my birthday is to reach $3,200 USD. That means I need just 100 people to donate! There are thousands of you reading this, so I’m hopeful we can get there. And if even more donate, maybe we can reach $5,000 — the average cost of an entire clean water project in a developing nation!

And there’s one more really cool thing. Charity:water is an outstanding organization, and they will give 100% of your donation directly to these projects. None of it goes to overhead. And in several months, they will even update us with information on the specific projects our money funds. Pretty cool, huh?

Please consider joining me. Be one of the 100 people to help celebrate my birthday with a small donation:

I’m really happy to notice we share the same birthday! Although I’m slightly younger, it’s the date, really.

Happy Birthday! It’s my birthday too –though I am a good bit older at 45. Love the charity idea. I know you won’t mind if I steal it –the more help the better. Blessings to you on this day!

What a great idea! Unfortunetelly, 32 dollars is not a few bucks in Real (money from Brazil) but I´ll try to donate 10 dollars and give you “a third” of a gift.
:) How about that? :)

Of course! There is no need to do the exact amount. Especially when exchange rates come into play!

Done and done! You’re right – being able to sew for leisure is a huge luxury when we think of it in a global (& historical!) perspective. I love that you’ve chosen a cause that mightn’t be the sexiest but is among the most effective in terms of improving lives. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I had a little 4 yr old patient today and we were talking about how I need to go and buy Tangled the movie, and she said that God tells us to be thankful for what we have. Out of the mouths of babes and it had me thinking all day long.

A wonderful idea. As another happy fabric fancier tuning 32 this soon, I think this is a great idea worth supporting. Happy Birthday!
(and also to the previous commenters also celebrating a birthday)

I love this idea Sarai – you have a lovely way of writing and expressing yourself and your beliefs. I’m of the same mind – we are so fortunate to have been born in and/or live in a country where we have so much access to resources.

Count me in for $32!

Happy birthday! Well, what an inspirational post! It’s my birthday Monday, so I’m joining in on this with a donation for you.

Birthdays have mysteriously depressed me in the past and this year I decided it would be different. So I threw myself a Facebook party and asked everyone to do a random act of kindness over the weekend and included a link to this blog that had some great ideas. I finally realized that my birthday doesn’t have to be all about me….just maybe that was the problem before.

Today I found your post and I believe it’s confirmation that I am having a happy birthday this year…at last. It only took 43 years!

Blessing you on your birthday!
