Giveaway: Win a copy of 110 Creations: A Sewist’s Notebook

110-creations-giveaway

To go along with our new Wardrobe Architect challenge this year, Beth of 110 Creations has kindly offered to give away a free copy of her wonderful planning notebook!

110 Creations: A Sewist’s Notebook is a lovely little planner that you can use to sketch, scheme, and dream. Use the croquis and accompanying notes to plan out all of your projects this year.

I love the idea of not only having a single place to keep sketches and plans, but a nice little record of the things you’ve made. I was thinking it would be fun to attach a photo of the finished garment (even if it didn’t turn out perfect) to each page.

How to enter

To enter, leave a comment and let us know how you planned your last sewing project! Did you buy swatches? Did you start with the pattern? Fall in love with a fabric? Get an idea from a photo or a garment you already had? How did it come to be?

I’ll pick one winner at random on Sunday, Feb 1st at noon pacific time. This is open to international as well as US entries!

PS: If you’d like to purchase the book, Beth tells me that there is currently a 10% discount. It ends tomorrow (the 29th) at midnight eastern, and the code is MOREFUN.

ETA: Congrats to Claire, who won with this hilarious comment: “oh you’re supposed to plan? That’ll be where I’m going wrong then.”

I often start with a picture or an idea from my kids for a game or a soft toy : last project was a memory game. I jumped into my fabrics and I pick one two three types! I want to use all my fabrics, it’s always difficult to choose! I try to write each step one a sheet because it helps me not to forget small details that can be important . And if I have a problem with a step, the best way for me to solve it is to have a good night sleep and every single time the solution pops out of my head in the morning!

My last *finished* sewing project was a shirt. First came the pattern, and then the trip to the fabric shop to buy fabric. I usually work this way, as I am quite bad at trying to match fabric in my stash to specific projects!

For my last project I was inspired by some bloggers, they were all soo excited about sewing underwear that I just couldn’t resist :D I bought pattern and fabric all in one and it was reeeal fun! :) Also I would really like to have such a notebook ;)

Although I have lots of planned projects, my latest completed one was using a 1951 Australian Home Journal Pattern that I had been wanting to use for a while, but when I was at the fabric shop buying some fabric for a completely different project, I found the sweetest drapey fabric with a print of Kitties and Hearts, for only $2 per meter, and I just had to make it up straight away!

thanks for the chance; this would be fab! i have a little notebook in which i jot down all the patterns i own, however it is now full! to plan my projects i turned to the vintage pledge i made. i know there is no hope of me fulfilling it if i do not plan ahead. so i have already chosen the patterns, the fabric and the notions, and packed them into bags separately so i can’t accidentally use them for something else! thanks for the chance to win, this is a fab prize!

My current project is a beautiful spring dress. Fabric is mint green and very light yellow organic cotton. I bought an online pattern for it.
Never won a giveaway in my life, but maybe this time I’ll be more lucky :)

For my last project, I was sorting out my fabric stash when I found a sheer fabric I had bought last year, then a pattern came to my mind immediately and I sketched out my idea. Usually my garment planning starts with a pattern, goes to sketching and then I find the right fabric.

My last project started from the fabric. I was between a top and a skirt but finally chose the top option. It turned out very nice and I wear it a lot!

My last sewing project was a Tudor-style doublet for a character that I play in a LARP. I had been given a some cloth for my stash by my mum and I needed an item to show the advancing rank of my character for a dinner I was attending. The pattern and colour were perfect for what I had in mind, but I did a bit of research into cuts and details of other Tudor doublets. I ended up adapting a pattern I already had to fit a more feminine frame, added hand-made buttons and thread button loops and made it in the week before the event. I had planned to make the garment earlier in the month, but it always seems that I sort other people’s kit before I look at my own which leads to finishing up garments on the night before travelling away for LARP events. Oops …

My latest project, ie the one I’m working, came from a fabric I’ve been eyeing for a long time, hoping it would come on winter sale. It didn’t, but I still couldn’t resist. I used a pattern I had used before, even though it’s knit, it’s still shaped with pleats and a midriff band. In spite of my having made the pattern before I still ended up with some fitting issues I had to account for. I would love to use the notebook for more dreaming.

I started with the pattern (I wanted a smart casual dress for work) and then went fabric shopping, keeping in mind that I needed to not go crazy given that it’s for the office! I found a great fabric – navy (so neutral for work) but with a small white squirrels print (fitting my Wardrobe Architect ‘fun’ keyword!).

I keep eyeing up the 110 Creations book, as I’d love to be a bit more rigorous about planning projects.

My last sewing project was a bag for my mum to take to her hospital appointments. The fabric was vibrant oilcloth and just shouted out to me. The bag dimensions were planned around fitting in a good stash of magazines and knitting. And the little pocket – to sneak in a few sweets :-)

I followed the pattern and when finished made some notes about adjustments I’d like to make. Then I took the measurements and taped some extra bits of paper to the pattern. I made up another one with some extra fabric, and it didn’t come out exactly as I thought it would but that’s the learning process right? So I’ll try again making some more tweaks!

Nice! My project: doll shoes. I was inspired by a picture of an adult shoe that I wanted to make into a doll’s shoe. I am still on the project and have tried 3 different materials so far. I am now on my 4th and I think this may be it! I have learned a lot through this trial and error. Maybe I should get a book! Thanks.

My last project was a new pair of jeans planned to go with my silhouette’s for the season. Very planned out but mainly focused on the organic stretch denim I found. I used my tried and true modified jeans pattern and spent most of my time on hand embroidering my back pockets with a pomegranate and citrus motif. I went with coral topstitching to coordinate with my seasonal colors. Love the fit and that they’re my unique style!

The most recent thing that I sewed was a pair of navy Hudson pants. I thought that they’d be great to wear around the house without feeling sloppy (they are!) and I already had some sweatshirt fleece in my stash that I wanted to use. I’m now imagining pairs in other colors and fabric types.

For my last project, I started with the fabric. I bought a ton of it when it was on sale, without a plan of what exactly to make. Then I searched through my patterns to use, but ended up buying a new one for it. But usually I start with a pattern or garment idea, then find the fabric for it.

I am still trying to finish my last project. It is a chemise to go under a corset I am making which is taking an almighty long time because I decided to embroider it. The chemise is a mashup of two patterns with 3/4 sleeves made with two different silks. But in the middle of making it we moved to seattle. So now I am unpacking rather than seeing. I usually document my projects in my blog. But on bigger ones they end up in a notebook. Would love to have one just for that purpose!

Hi there! My last sewing project included a “hippie” shirt for college boyfriend and curtains for his VW van. Oh yes, it has been decades since I’ve sewn. Noodling which sewing machine to buy, and how to create my attic space.
Here is my plan. Have b/w toile fabric from years ago plan to make pillows for my bedroom. Such fabric will not fit into my new old craftsman home……..so I will make an apron (I love aprons?) as my very first project as soon as I get up and running.
Your blog is a continual source of inspiration to me – so love that fact the sewing is popular now with all ages and that a “handmade” wardrobe can be so sophisticated.
Best of luck to all! (And oh, how I could use this planning device……..)

My last project was inspired by lack of inspiration to finish the project before that! Retro bow tie blouse…stuck on the cuffs. Decided to throw together the summer 2014 Burda mag retro woven t-shirt in an ikat linen b/c it looked quick and easy…ignoring my unfinished sheath dress, my yet to be started gabardine suit, the wool thrift skirt I started disassembling, the a-line skirt I need to take in…clearly I need that sketchbook/planner!

I saw the pattern(s) first – cardigan and leggings from Seamwork mag. Found a black French terry knit at a local shop, and made them. Then saw a pretty wool plaid (with a silver strand going through the plaid) at Hancocks. I knew which mini skirt pattern I had on hand to make to put the outfit together. Love it.

For my last project, I had bought a pattern on sale and wanted to try it out, so I went to my stash and selected a pretty snakeskin patterned rayon. Voila! A lovely shirt to wear to work under my cardigan or jacket. I am afraid I don’t really plan – I just go by instinct. However, I do need a plan, as my fabric stash is ridiculously large (as is my pattern stash). Having something to keep me organized would be great. Thanks for the chance to win the book!

I try to get a silhouette or specific wardrobe piece in mind first, and I doodle out a long list of garments to sew; but then I always wind up getting distracted in the fabric store! Especially in the red tag / clearance section. The last piece of fabric I bought was a super graphic cotton on serious clearance – its print is so mod that it was crying out to be a shift dress, so that’s what it will become.

The last few projects I’ve worked on have been stash busting projects primarily. I find a pattern I want to make and then dig through the piles of fabric to see what I have enough of. I don’t generally plan things out in minute detail before I start working, although I do often do preliminary sketches.

My last project was born out of completely fabricated “necessity.” I wanted some slim black jeans to wear out to a party, had bought suitable fabric a few days before, and 6 hours later my fourth pair Ginger Jeans were ready to be worn!

My last sewing project was inspired by a need. Winters here in Taiwan don’t get very cold, so we don’t have heaters in my flat. It does get down to 8 C (48 F) a few nights a year, so it’s chilly with no heater.

So I decided to make really awesome warm fuzzy pajamas.

I downloaded a pattern for button-up PJs and then went shopping with ideas for fabric: a plush in some sort of classic pattern, either plaid, stripes, or preferably, houndstooth. And then I found a shop in our giant fabric market with plush houndstooth in 3 colors! I got classic black and white, and I’ll be sleeping in the PJs for the first time tonight.

My last sewing project was a Christmas gift. Since the gift recipient has a new house, the project was inspired by the house’s decor and color scheme.

In general though, it would be great to have this notebook to plan future projects. Usually I get overwhelmed by all the things I want to make but I don’t often sit down and make a detailed and well thought out plan!

My last sewing project came together really nicely. I had a pattern I wanted to make, but not the fabric. My last project was a faux leather coat. I had been watching too much La Femme Nikita and that TV shows always makes me want to sew new clothes.

my last project is a bag, I knew which pattern I wanted for a very long time, bought all the haberdashery but had no magical feeling with any fabric that I came along, for months. Suddely, a vintage looking orange yellow looking fabric smiled to me, and I hope to finish the project next weeks!

My most recent (and first ever!) sewing project was inspired by some green & blue satin I saw in a charity shop. I saw it & knew it was destined to be a party dress. I also came across the pattern, a vintage dress with a fitted bodice, V-back and gathered skirt, in a charity shop and knew they were meant for each other. It took a couple of months before I gathered up the courage to attempt it (having previously only sewn cushion covers), but it turned out well, especially for a first project:https://pastryandpurls.wordpress.com/2015/01/25/60s-sleeveless-dress-victory/

I’m now thinking about my next project, which will probably be a circle skirt made out of some bright green vintage fabric.

My last project was a test garment for a self drafted pencil skirt and a new hemming technique. I picked fabric that was given to me when my mother cleaned out her fabric stash. I made a promise to myself not to increase my stash because I am having to downsize, and my closet is full. I chose a boucle I have had for quite awhile and went in search of a pattern. The one I wanted was out of print, so I searched on Ebay. These finds coincided with a class I have wanted to attend for some time, and walla, my creation unfolded. Amazing what you can find hidden away right inside your own stash.

My last project was a Tshirt so I had the pattern first then went fabric hunting. That said

The last sewing project I did was a month ago: a dress for my 28 year old daughter to wear to a beach wedding in Cancun. She wears a size 16 and knows what style she looks good in, but couldn’t find it in the stores in Wisconsin in December. We went to the local fabric store together and looked at patterns, deciding on a wrap knit dress with flutter sleeves. We found some stretchy, lightweight jersey in a colorful, texture-y chevron pattern, and I sewed the dress over a couple of weekends, with her coming home for fittings.

I saw this gorgeous Tahari coat ($$$), so I got work on drafting a similar pattern. I have made it in a lightweight wool (a wearable muslin of sorts) to work out the fitting. I’m inspired to make more clothes and organization is always the first start!

My last sewing project came as the result of wanting to learn a specific skill. I wanted to learn how to sew knits, mostly t-shirts, henleys, etc. But since it’s tough to find a sewing class that teaches how to make men’s garments specifically (or that offers men’s patterns as one of the options when learning techniques), I finally found a class that would let me bring in a pattern for men’s boxer-briefs as my project. (The women in the class had MANY more project/pattern options, by the way.)

Et voilà: I now have a lovely pair of men’s boxer-briefs that fit perfectly. Totally unnecessary, from a Wardrobe Architect perspective (as I have dozens of pairs of undies), but I’m hoping that the skills will translate to an upcoming project: sewing a henley.

My tiny, postage-stamp sewing room is full of yarn, fabric, patterns and notions that I have collected over the years. My last project was inspired by a picture in one of my vintage knitting magazines…a young woman from the 1940s getting ready to go out. The outfit was very simple, and in black and white, but the skirt was just, well, perfect somehow! I spent the day going through all of my stash and making a beautiful mess of the room, and found the perfect fabric, and was able to alter a pattern to create a similar skirt of my own. It was such fun!

I have just finished sewing today a repair project – last June I made my first Sorbetto top, but after a few washes my handmade bias binding started to come away around the sleeves and then the neck line. This was due to the fact that as a total beginner, I made the bias too narrow (I realise now) and it didn’t ‘grasp’ hold of the fabric!

After looking at it for four months back on my sewing table, I decided to tackle it, but instead of unpicking I just trimmed off the bias. This worked well on the sleeves and front neck, but on the back neck I clipped the fabric randomly (lying underneath!) and so then had a big gash also to deal with!

I re-shaped the back neck taking it lower to cut away the clipped bit, I then made wider bias and re stitched.

I now have a lovely new Sorbetto with a deep scooped back, very unexpected as it would have been something that I would not have looked at in pattern form!

So, my mistakes made good !!

The Film Dress!
For a fund raising event I made a cocktail dress out of 35mm film (Denzel Washington and Harrison Ford movies – not bad!). I hand stitched the film through the sprockets onto a black knit foundation to create 3 pieces: a bustier top, a ribbon curl skirt and a cummerbund with an over-sized film bow on the back. It was a huge hit with the patrons and we raised a lot of money for a great cause. (And it was so fun to make!)

My last project involved scrapbusting and lots of pretty pairs of underpants. I love an all-in-one notebook. One of my favorite things to do when I’m too tired to actually sew is cozy up on the couch with some drawing materials and plan my makes.

My last project was inspired by a piece in my fabric stash, which turned out to be close to the 2015 Pantone color of the year, Marsala, and it just felt like it wanted to be a button down blouse. I drafted a pattern from a RTW blouse that fits me well. It ended up being a good sewing experience because I had done up a muslin first. I really need to add some more pieces to my 2015 wardrobe though.

My last project was my first attempt at a top that actually fit me. I picked the Sorbetto because it had lots and lots and lots of tutorials for different adjustments, etc… I made eight (8!) muslins before it fit. The final version I made out of an IKEA fabric covered in red fish because I was exhausted and tired and thought “FISH FABRIC!!!”. Halfway through I thought it was going to be horrible because, well, fish fabric from IKEA. But I finished it anyway. It’s my favorite because it’s mine and I made it and it’s covered in fish.

Now that I have a couple of patterns under my belt (har) I am looking forward to being able to actually pick fabrics I like for projects, instead of random scrap fabric. I’ve been too afraid to ruin nice stuff until now.

I work part time in a fabric store. Our clients are wonderfully creative so I often get really excited about a fabric or style only after I see what someone else is thinking of doing with it. My last project was a wrap dress. I got talking with a customer about the fact that 2014 was the 40th anniversary of Diane von Furstenberg’s wrap dress design. We both felt a little sad that we hadn’t made one in 2014 to commemorate this. Trust me, sewing nerds get this. We agreed that a particular knit jersey we had in the store would be perfect for it and we both needed one. The rest is wrap dress history. :)

My last project came about because I am trying to “stashbust”. I really wanted to try Oslo, even if the silhouette didn’t really fit my capsule ideas, and I had a lovely red knit boiled wool to use. The colour fits my capsule, and I’ve been wearing it around because its been sooooo cold.

My husband really wanted comfortable aloha shirts. He knew exactly how he liked his shirts, and they don’t sell them anymore like that…; I bought a vintage pattern for xxxl sizes online. A friend bought the fabric on Maui. He sent pictures from the store for us to choose the fabric. This friend taught me how to make and fit the aloha shirt. (so grateful!) We made one (striking) aloha shirt together, and one i made by myself (beginner sewist).

I found some gorgeous mustard coloured cotton at my local sewing shop that I couldn’t possibly live without. There only ended up being a metre and a half but I took it home, even had a nap with it beside my head (weird, I know, but it just happened that way) and checked Pinterest for mustard blouse inspiration. Ended up hacking a pattern I already had and pairing it with a plum coloured skirt.

For my last project I was definitely inspired by some fabric I threw in my online basket on a whim – purple sweater knitish with black printed horses. Then it was just a matter of finding the ideal pattern which ended up being Megan Nielsen’s Briar with black contrast bands. Although I tend to go back & forth on what inspires me first, sometimes it’s the fabric, sometimes it’s the pattern.

I am always inspired by fabric first. It is the engine that drives the (sewing) machine. Thank you for the contest.

I have a sketchbook titled “Problem Solving” where I draw a figure and what I need. From there, I look at the silhouette to determine a pattern, write in measurements, and possible fabric choices.

With my last project, I did things a little different than I usually do. Typically, I find a pattern, look for fabric, and go from there. This time, I used fabric from my stash. I intended to make a pair of shorts from the the denim. However, when I saw the mod version of the Laurel dress, I decided to do that instead.

I bought the pattern first and then got some fabric online and just went for it! it actually turned out great. Right now I am planning my wedding dress and I am getting swatches first and trying to find the perfect pattern.

I’m a quilter hoping to move into garment-making in 2015. My project planning all occurs on graph paper – sketching out blocks and overall quilt layouts, making charts to record what I’ve cut and what I need, even just making fabric wish lists! The Sewist’s Notebook looks like a great resource for planning projects.

I am just finishing up some fabric grocery bags. Our Australian state outlawed plastic bags years ago and we need some new bags. I bought a pretty heavier cotton on sale and recycled some sheets for the lining. I love upcycling fabric and ditching landfill so am pretty chuffed with the 8 bags that I have made.

I just winged it. And regretted it…

Somehow I can never stick to my plans, I buy fabric when I love it and even if I have an idea, it could still turn into something else… My blouse became a skirt, my knit-dress a tee. It all starts with fabric though, there are projects I’d love to make, but I lack the right fabrics…

I usually find a fabric, then a pattern then decide the changes I want to use.

I took a copy of the b&w picture of the coat i was going to make, and some colored pencils, and proceeded to try out different color combos. I had already purchased the fabric, so was just choosing how to use what I had on hand. The pattern was actually a jacket pattern to be made with fleece. It wasn’t lined, or finished in the usually way, so I was also considering how I would do that. I did most of that in my head. The Jacket/coat is nearly done now, just need to put in the fasteners and shore up my lining.

I planned my last sewing project by purchasing soft cotton sheets from COSTCO for 14 bucks to make two kimonos for my husband and myself. I couldn’t buy this fabric bty and afford it. Then I searched for vintage kimono fabric to go along with my color (creame) and chose silk with cranes and a second trim color with whirlpools in red and white. My husband struggled but decided to embellish his kimono with a silk scarf that his mother gave him as a teenager with a tiger on it. We are in the process of finding a suitable gold trim. The pattern is simple, the choices took much longer to make.
