Tutorial: How to make a lace overlay collar

Next up in the transformation of the pretty Violet pattern: the ever so lovely lace overlay collar. Check out our previous tutorial If you’d like to add tucks to your blouse.

You will need:

  • Violet pattern and necessary supplies
  • Lace fabric
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Seam ripper

Step 1: Cut out three collar pieces: one in lace, two in the fabric matching your blouse.

Step 2: Apply interfacing to the wrong side of one non-lace collar piece.

Step 3: Pin lace collar piece to non-interfaced fabric collar piece so the right sides of both pieces are facing up. Baste the two pieces together along outer and inner edges. Then, staystitch around the neckline of both the lace/fabric collar piece and interfaced collar piece.

Step 4: With right sides together, pin and sew along outer edge of collar pieces.

Step 5: Pull out basting stitches with seam ripper. Cut several notches in the seam allowance along the outer edge.

Step 6: Turn the right sides out and press collar flat. Use a bamboo pointer turner or any pointed object to help force the edges of fabric near the seam out. Join collar to neckline and continue per pattern directions, or hold tight for our soon to be posted clustered button loops tutorial!

Here’s a little teaser…

Hi,
I have recently bought the book “The Colette Sewing Handbook” and I have as yet not made any clothes from the patterns included. However I am quite keen on making the Licorice dress with another collar.

The collar included with the pattern has folds on and that doesn’t look good on me. So what I am asking is if you have some ideas for an alternate collar. One that lies flat along the neck of the dress.

I still wonder if I want to make it in the same cloth as the dress itself or if I want to make it in another fabric.

I would appreciate any input you can give me.
Yours sincerely,

Katharina
